The Scarsdale Garden Club advanced its station area project by planting 100 Sargent junipers on the East Parkway slope. The Village Board funded the shrubbery and will replace any dogwoods or shrubs that failed in the summer drought. The effort began over a year ago with the removal of 350 feet of wire fencing.
Editorial page introduces Villagers, a new cartoon family created for the Inquirer by Jack Davis. Davis, longtime Mad magazine artist and Georgia native, based on Scarsdale living and local experience. He works from home and has ties to Boy Scouts and Saint James the Less Church. Continued on Page Ten.
Voters across Scarsdale backed Rudolph Berle for town supervisor and elected John Friedman and Granville Pine as Justices of the Peace. Berle won 4 076 to 2 540 over Leonard Kane as the Republican ticket swept 11 districts. All twelve districts approved seven amendments by strong margins.
At a Scarsdale School Board hearing in the high school gym about a proposed bond issue, ten residents spoke. Six favored the plan, three opposed, one asked questions, with about 100 attendees and praise from local civic groups for the proposal’s alignment with educational goals.
The Town Club Education and School Budget Committee will urge approval of a 2.27 million bond for Scarsdale schools. The plan covers 2.178 million for the high school and 92 thousand for Edgewood, aiming to ease crowding and modernize facilities. Houston H. Wasson chairs. Gerald J. McMahon is vice chair.
Aileen Robinson leaves her 20 plus year stint as Edgewood School principal on February 1 to become principal of the American Community School in Beirut Lebanon. She has taught in India and led an international camp in the French Alps and will manage a K 12 private school serving American personnel in the Middle East. The Beirut assignment came after a suggestion from Dr Dwight Knox headmaster of the Beirut school.
The Scarsdale League of Women Voters reviews its study of the forthcoming school bond issue. It lists major items proposed, including a new three story addition to the high school with science facilities library and audio-visual facilities for the district.
