At a straw vote the Arthur Manor Neighborhood Association backed a land purchase on the Post road for a village park. George Clifton, acting as Village Trustee, urged residents to support officers and attend regular meetings to advance the project.
Seventy eight women played on opening day at Scarsdale Golf Club the largest field for an opener. Mrs Hugh McDonald won low net in Class A with 93 gross 82 net and won the ball sweepstakes. Class B low net went to Mrs George A Walker Bronxville with 116 gross 85 net. Mrs Edward Raymond had fewest putts. Several players qualified for May tournament in both classes. Prizes and lunch followed with bridge prizes awarded by Mrs I N Isam and Mrs W B Kirkpatrick.
A summons was issued last Saturday evening to George Hunter of Central avenue Hartsdale after he failed to stop for a red signal on the Post road at Fenimore road and crashed into Frank E. Pierce of 906 Post road. The impact pushed the other car twenty feet, tore the spare tire carrier into the gasoline tank, and fresh white paint was applied to traffic signs and arrows this week.
The Wayside Players of Scarsdale stage H M S Pinafore at Dyckman Hall on May 24 and 25. Rehearsals involve over sixty performers including principals, chorus, sailors horn pipe, and orchestra under Mrs. Hugh Adair and John Roosa. Advance ticket sales noted with costumes and scenery prepared.
The Scarsdale Boy Scouts annual field day will be held at 2:30 PM on May 19 at the High School field on Post Road. Reviewing officers include Donald G. Ross and staff. Gordon C. Sleeper will select the winning troop for a Legion plaque. After drill, scouts head to Fort Slocum for an evening meal and a ceremony presenting The Old Timers Token to the outstanding scout.
Twelve Scarsdale residents lead organizers of the Westchester Conservation Association formed this week in White Plains. The group unites county conservation interests to preserve nature amid population growth and development, aiming to coordinate nature with civilization for lasting public benefit.
The Drake Road Neighborhood Association will hold an open meeting at Edgewood School at 8 15 PM next Tuesday to discuss buying about twenty two acres on Post Road north of the High School for school and municipal uses. O H Cheney president of the school board will speak on school needs and answer questions about the program. The gathering aims to inform citizens before the May 28 school meeting to vote on the school’s share of the possible purchase.
Scarsdale Rotary Club moved its regular Thursday luncheon to Wednesday so members could attend the 29th Rotary District conference at Lake Mohonk New York. Attending were Dr Ralph R Ryan Arthur Boniface and Benjamin Ruggiero.
The Harvey Birch Chapter D A R met May 10 at Mrs Lorrie Scott's home. Officers elected unanimously: Regent Mrs George E Hewitt First Vice Regent Mrs Arthur Hebard Second Vice Regent Mrs Lorne Scott Recording Secretary Mrs John Skinner Corresponding Secretary Miss Clare Anway Treasurer Mrs Raymond E Meek Registrar Mrs Herbert Outwater Historian Mrs Walter Roeder. The nominating committee was Mrs Henry Maurer Mrs George Green and Mrs William N Carpenter. Membership nearly doubled to 38 with four applications at national registrar and 15 in hand. All state and national obligations paid and excess contributions noted. The chapter contributed to veterans hospital fund Ellis Island box and $154 to Constitution Hall.
The Westchester County Historical Society announces its sixth annual pilgrimage led by Charles J. Dunlap. It will start 10 a.m. from the Armonk Inn with visits to Armonk North Castle Bedford Village Pound Ridge North Salem and Somers. Speakers include Reginald Pelham Bolton Thatcher T P Luquer W S Hadaway and Charles J F Decker discussing Indian shelters Bedford Pound Ridge Tarleton’s capture in 1779 and Old Bet the first elephant in America at Somers Old Elephant Inn.
The Westchester County Music Festival continues at White Plains Armory with Elijah featuring the New York Symphony Orchestra under Albert Stoessel. Chorus members from Mount Vernon to Port Chester perform with soloists Ruth Rodgers and Anna Case among others.
The three commissioners Charles S. Hoff W Douglas Braidwood and Stephen L Angell met Thursday to decide whether the district should buy water from Scarsdale or Greenville Water District Both sources pull from the New York City main with Scarsdale also drawing from the Pocantico Reservoir The panel noted Greenville offers greater pressure and officials aim to choose the option most advantageous to taxpayers
Brooms were the only fire fighting tools used by the Scarsdale Fire Company to extinguish two grass fires. One occurred Sunday afternoon at Ogden and Fox Meadow roads, and the second at Brown Place on Monday afternoon.
Memorial Day events begin with a 9 30 A M parade from Garth and Ardsley to St James the Less churchyard where Rev Alan R Chalmers will officiate the graves ceremony. The march continues to the High School field for the address by Rev George Hugh Smyth.
The Harwood building at Chase Road and Spencer Place is under construction and slated to open August first. Leases cover over two thirds of ground floor shops including a beauty shop radio store butcher gift book shop and more with several current Scarsdale tenants moving in. The arcade will extend from East Parkway to Harwood court and the Post Office will gain enlarged quarters in the building.
Arthur Lorenzo of White Plains collided with Christopher Reid of Tuckahoe while attempting to pass on the Post road between Fenimore and Murray Hill roads last Monday morning. Lorenzo agreed to pay for all damages to Reid’s car. No injuries were reported.
