Scarsdale’s Auxiliary Police, seven on duty during the Bicentennial House Tour, helped traffic control and public safety, enabling professionals to handle burglaries fires and a lost child report. The article also notes membership declines and calls for expansion to 50.
Greenacres residents must pick up mail held for them at a new carrier annex at 590 Central Avenue starting Monday May 17. Five mail routes will transfer letter carriers from Chase Road to relieve main office congestion. The Parcel Post Annex at Freightway closes May 15 and its functions move to the central annex and main office. The Freightway building may be demolished for public parking. Hours are weekdays 9:30-11:30 and 12:30-4:30, Saturdays 9:30-noon. Phone GR 2.0593.
Scarsdale trustees awarded the Officer of the Year and lifesaving honors to Ptl. Thomas Savino and Ptl. Harry Loeber as part of a new incentive program. Other officers received certificates, while residents criticized issues from a retaining wall to flooding and pool memberships during a three hour meeting.
An informal reception for Scarsdale Board of Education candidates Robert P. Shay and Edmund R. Schroeder will be held Sunday May 16 from 4 30 to 6 p m at Wayside Cottage. Rosemary Flinn and Martin Bowen co chair the support committee with Mary Carol Miller as event chair. Refreshments served with extra parking by the tennis courts below Wayside Cottage.
County Legislator Audrey Hochberg calls for a county public works traffic plan to accompany a proposed median barrier on the Bronx River Parkway. The barrier would push southbound traffic from Woodlands Place into Walworth Avenue and raise congestion in Scarsdale and White Plains residential streets. Two civic associations have formed a committee to study impacts and solutions, with construction eyed for 1977.
Scarsdale police, honored by the Village Board, reported five arrests and multiple burglaries and thefts this past week. A man in a stolen car fled toward White Plains but was caught. a passenger Elbert Howard was jailed for possession of stolen property. Gideon and other suspects faced burglary charges, with several residences and valuables targeted.
The board announced changes to the budget at a hearing trading a split kindergarten for three morning sessions and two afternoon callbacks. Summer school is eliminated and driver education is phased out, with a new learning disabilities center planned at the high school for extra help.
