The Board of Education of District 1 adopted a noon hour supervision policy for elementary schools. A letter to mothers argues that lunch and supervision are parental, not taxpayer or teacher duties, and extends noon recess by 15 minutes to 3 pm. Principals will use discretion on individual cases with records to reevaluate in 1956.
The Fox Meadow and Greenacres School districts approved retirements resignations and nine new probationary teachers for fall staffing. Ruth Harker ends 27 years at Fox Meadow joined by remarks from two board members. Marilyn Blair heads to Austria on probation while Gordon Smith leaves for Freyberg Academy. Eleven new teachers begin probation. total 31 new staff, 15 percent, with nine in new positions and 22 replacements among retirements leaves and relocations.
Health Department records show two new chicken-pox cases and two mumps cases in Scarsdale during last week, detailing local disease activity and response needs.

Residents of Greenacres were asked to mark Monday evening May 23 for Tex McCrary NBC radio TV personality to address the Greenacres Assn annual meeting. Details on the meeting and McCrary career will appear next week in The Inquirer.
Mr and Mrs Dudley W Hallett of Walbrooke Rd were elected president of Edgemont High School PTA at a May 9 meeting as Edgemont becomes Seely Place School on July 1. The slate included first vice president Howard L Ver zuun, second vice president Henry M Baer, third vice president G Douglas Morris, recording secretary Mrs. Lawrence Marks, and treasurer Wilton Schaefer.
Carl W. Buchheister vice president of the National Audubon Society and director of the Audubon Nature Camp in Maine will present his color film Pasture of the Sea in the third and final Audubon Screen Tour. The May 20 program at 8 15 p m will be at Fox Meadow School auditorium.
Mrs. Andrew Wilson a Wayside guide shows Girl Scout Troop 82 the spot where a British half penny dated 1746 was found in the Harvey Birch room during reconstruction. Over 300 people have toured the cottage in the past year with Junior League guides leading tours for scouts classes and clubs.
The Scarsdale Women s Republican Club will host its annual meeting on May 23 at 1 30 with Maude Ten Eyck as speaker. The former Assemblywoman from New York 1st District serves as Journal Clerk to the New York State Assembly and co leader of the First Assembly District.
The Lawrence Ottinger Forest Products Fellowship Fund is created at the University of Washington College of Forestry by United States Plywood Corp to honor founder Lawrence Ottinger. Ottinger, who started the plywood company in 1919, died last December while serving as chairman and CEO. The fund supports graduate fellowships in plywood, wood particle board and adhesive development, with about a quarter of the contributions coming from employees and friends.
The Interschool Elementary Orchestra directed by Ira Krupenye will perform at Scarsdale High School auditorium Sunday at 3 30. The program includes Turkish Rondo Medley Haydn Serenade and Mozart pieces with solos by Dan Thomas Thomas Whipple Howard Block and Douglas Anderson among others.
Mrs. Richard Pomeroy was elected president at the annual High School PTA meeting in the A-B gym. Stanley J. Gordon, Miss Ellen Magnuson, Mrs. Saul Meyers, and William G. Stott were named officers with Mrs. Frank J. Hertel installing them. A panel of four graduates led by Principal Oliver W. Melchior discussed Scarsdale High experiences, to be continued next week.
The Scarsdale League of Women Voters open to members will meet Tuesday at 1 30 PM at the Scarsdale Plaza Theatre. A 20 minute techni color UNICEF film will be shown. Agenda includes local recreation administration for 1955 56 state convention delegates report new directors and election of two nomin ating committee members.
Cpl. George Greer of Elm Road arrived home on April 29 from Bremerhaven Germany, completing his tour with the 39th Regiment of Infantry at Nurnberg. After discharge at Camp Kilmer on May 4 his plans include returning to college.
Mrs. Robert S. Erskine is nominated for president of the Friends of the Scarsdale Library for the coming year. The election is set for next Friday at 8 15 p m at the Library, with Eugene Exman as vice president and Mrs. Jack Rollins, secretary, among others.
Erling G. Nelson reports 300 workers made personal calls on May 2 and gathered 2400 contributions, bringing the partial total to $9600 toward Scarsdale's $10,000 goal. Those yet to contribute may send checks to Walter G. Korntheuer at County Trust Co. East Parkway.
Miss Catherine Rodgers of Jefferson Road, a Bryn Mawr College senior, receives a Fulbright Scholarship to study at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She majored in English and contributed to College News and Theatre, and belonged to the Classics Club and the fencing team.
The village board in executive session urged the Planning Commission to restudy parking facilities and traffic flow in the station and business district. A public hearing on a building code amendment drew no comments. The board adopted the amendment allowing certain wood frame roofs with fire resistant ceilings up to one hour for specific school use. The State Traffic Commission plans electronic lighting control at Heathcote five corners to improve density control. A resident asked to lower road speed to protect children. referred to public safety committee. A West Quaker Ridge Association member urged planning protection for residential areas as site plans are reviewed. William L. Luman was reappointed chairman of the Community Fourth of July celebration.
The Inquirer calls for wedding pictures and accounts to be submitted promptly for advance planning by the society editor. Mothers of brides are urged to avoid last minute rushing as the month of weddings approaches.
Five Scarsdale citizens will receive Town Club medals at the annual meeting in the high school auditorium on Thursday May 19. Theodore Sander Jr leads the group. others include Mrs Harriette S Krantz Edwin A de Lima Mrs Amelie Rothschild and Malcolm C Spence. Reports on parks highways recreation zoning and planning will be given. graduates from Scouting will also be presented. Election of officers and three governors at large, plus nominations and admissions committee members, will occur.
Two county Urban League board members Harcourt Tynes and Walter Ludwig addressed District 1 Board of Education Monday night proposing the employment of Negro teachers to broaden Scarsdale students exposure to Black citizens. The league asked for teacher qualification lists and offered recruitment help.
Jamie Dunn of Eastwoods Lane and Juliet won best actress at Hofstra College Hempstead L I during the sixth annual Shakespeare festival presented by the Senior Dramatics Club of Scarsdale High School. John Hemmerly directed the project and oversaw the high school scene from Romeo and Juliet.
Bramlee Heights Ass'n sets its Spring meeting for Tuesday at 8:15 at Grace Lutheran Church Boulevard and Alida St. The agenda covers safety zoning and civil defense with a speaker and a motion picture showing.
The 17th Annual Exhibition of the Scarsdale Art Assoc runs May 8 to 22 at the Woman's Club with a tea. Jury members Molly Guion, Charles R. Kinghan and Charles Schucker selected prize winners including John Scott Williams for Mountain Shower in water colors, Nan Greacen for Portrait Head in charcoal, and Olin Stephens for Power in oils.
Col William P. Wright Jr of Sage Terrace, USAF Reserve, was selected by the USAF Extension Course Institute to attend the Firepower Demonstration at Eglin Air Force Base Florida on May 9. He was among 30 outstanding students from the Command and Staff School Correspondence Course chosen for the event conducted by the Air Proving Ground Command. Selection reflected his academic record and course participation.
Entries for the fourth annual Scarsdale Photo Contest open Monday and close Tuesday June 16. The public exhibition and judging will be Tuesday evening June 21 at the American Legion Hall. Janet Wilkins Gregory Chorlian and Mr and Mrs C Dana Fearon Jr serve on the contest committee. Entry blanks are available at the Recreation Dept Village Hall.
