Homeowners Learn About Solar Energy in Scarsdale Meeting
A standing room only solar energy talk at Scarsdale Library on Monday May 9 featured three speakers and a technical panel. Virginia Snitow opened the session introducing County Legislator Audrey Hochberg who described federal funding for home solar programs and cautioned energy use reduction. Hochberg noted 32 percent higher energy consumption in 1970 than 1960 and cited estimates that half of energy is wasted by poor techniques. She said Westchester residents may receive 400 grants for solar installations and gave John McLaughlin’s number for more info. Norman Kurtz from Princeton Architecture School explained passive and active solar systems, noting passive methods suit sunnier regions and active systems use flat plate collectors and a greenhouse heat transfer concept.
