Despite gale winds the High School auditorium overflowed for the Town Club public service award to Dean Rusk. Outside, five hundred protested U S policy in Vietnam as Rusk urged civic participation and input to Congress.
The U S Office of Education denied the suburban-urban summer project grant of over 40000 under ESEA Title III. Dr Donald G Emery said funds were unavailable for all requests. the district will reapply with modifications for 1968 after Scarsdale Board of Education meeting.
Winston Bradshaw, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Scarsdale Swimming Pool, told Founding Subscribers at Scarsdale Junior High about the May 15 deadline for 1200 subscribers. 750 subscriptions have been received and payments can be made by May 15 at the Recreation Department.
An alliance of the Scarsdale Teachers Association and budget negatives was blamed for the voluntary elementary lunch program's failure at last week's referendum. John A. Keeffe, speaking for the Organization for a Voluntary School Lunch Program, said the 1,779 to 1,015 vote did not reflect true sentiment and vowed continued support from the pro lunch group and budget backers.
The Scarsdale Art Association hosts a Spring Show at the Woman's Club on May 14 and May 21 from 3 to 6 PM. A Vanishing Night on May 21 from 8 to 10 PM includes a critique by three prominent artists. members and guests invited.
Ogden Reid, former editor and publisher of the New York World Journal Tribune, voices distress at the paper’s closing. He notes more than 3,500 jobs lost and cites responsibility for the collapse and rising costs impacting New York's working press and the newspaper profession.
Village Manager Tooley reported at the Tuesday board meeting that ten safety measures were approved. Walks will be built on Kingston Road Berkley Road Fenimore Road Gaylor Road Montrose Road Huntington Road and Garden Road with sidewalk safety upgrades and a widening plan for Garden Road. New no parking rules will apply on Gaylor Heathcote Montrose Sage Terrace and both sides of Montrose. Public notice and comments precede enforcement in 30 days. A county plan to realign Fountain Terrace Parkway faced skepticism from Mayor MacIntyre and our consultants Wilbur Smith Associates.
A petition signed by 750 adults and 215 high school students was presented to Secretary of State Rusk by the Scarsdale Appeal to Dean Rusk Committee calling for bombing cessation in Viet Nam de escalation and broader peace talks. Albert Robinson led the visit and a full page ad in last week’s Inquirer outlined the group’s proposals. Rusk urged written comments to Washington and said he would reply in writing. The meeting remained cordial with no minds changed.
Trustee Carol Stix told the Village Board last Tuesday about a May 2 meeting to maintain and beautify the Heathcote Five Corners area. Participants included village officials, Conservation Council, PTA, Woman's Club, East Scarsdale Association, Town Club, Friends of the Parks, Boy Scouts, and local real estate owners.
About five hundred Westchester residents braved cold rain for a silent Vietnam peace vigil as Secretary of State Dean Rusk received the Town Club’s public service award. More than one thousand, including Rusk’s son David, attended at Scarsdale High School auditorium, with youth speaker Jerylle Kemp among others highlighting service and peace.
