A letter to the editor lists items needed by the Hartsdale Free Library including Standard Dictionary, Westchester County maps and atlas, World Atlas, War Maps, a bookcase, cabinet file, desk lamps and fixtures, electric light globes, a flagstaff with holders, a newspaper rack, a library lock, and a round table for reading and reference rooms.
Gedney Farm Company led by President Robert E. Farley reports multiple leases and new construction near the Gedney Farm Hotel. A New York architect Kenneth Murthison leases a Colonial residence on Sherman Ave to A. H. Campbell with April possession. Willard E. Day rents a Park Drive home. Douglas de Johnston’s new house nears completion. Contracts for grading and planting, landscape work, and 10 room tapestry-brick house on Du Pont Ave are noted. A $10,000 Burling Ave residence for Bernard Hopp begins, a ten room Littlejohn Place house with three baths is planned, and golf course work nears completion. Tennis courts and Plains Gun Club traps see spring upgrades.
In Scarsdale a village incorporation vote passed 142 to 39 with 181 ballots. The town club organized petitions while opponents warned of loss of highway state aid and potential government fragmentation. A village council and new offices would replace town government, with elections delayed to the third Tuesday in June.
A state bill seeks to empower towns to substitute a village government for town government in Scarsdale. If enacted it would eliminate most town offices except the supervisor and allow Scarsdale to run as a village, simplifying accounts. The Legislature is expected to adjourn around April 20.
Members of the Shakespeare Club spent a delightful day in Bend at the home of Mrs. L. M. Jones. An well written article on parcel post was read in the meeting, per the Niles Sun.
Pastor Stokes, born in Poland to a Jewish rabbi, has an immigrant journey via England to America. He supported five siblings, worked in tobacco factories, then pursued journalism and social work in Newark and the East Side. G Phelps Stokes dedicates his fortune to social causes and will attend the Sears-Ale meeting with his wife.
Westchester County faces staffing gaps as it becomes the largest New York county without salaried probation officers. The State Probation Board discussed collaboration with Yonkers and Mt. Vernon to address rising criminal work and support village and town justices. County court records show 294 cases in 1914 with 205 felonies and 9 misdemeanors. 197 pled guilty and 267 convicted. Scarsdale Estates announces the sale of the Hitchcock Homestead on Fenimore Road opposite the Thomas Watt estate. Daniel P. Ritchey of New York City will take possession June 1 and plans extensive alterations. The landmark homestead, long associated with Welcome Hitchcock and his wife, was a show place and benefactor to Westchester.
Governor Whitman signs two Westchester county measures. One bill creates a county building commission with members Robert S. Brewster W Lawrence and David Mertz. The other provides for a county department plan proposed by the Weatherer Chamber of Commerce.
The Board of Supervisors rejected a measure to add two supreme court justices in the ninth judicial district by a 21 to 13 vote after a heated debate. The session also approved a county budget of 1,099,632.67 with 926,722.79 in county taxes, and discussed local sewer projects and town village reorganization plans in Scarsdale.
