The village of Scarsdale projects a 1927 tax rate of 7.438 per thousand, down from 7.44 in 1926, despite higher operating costs. Estimated village valuation reaches 41 million dollars with a 35 thousand dollar levy increase, while police, lighting, and the waste plant incur major budget hikes. Page three continues.
Wayside Garden Club of Scarsdale participates in the Federated Garden Clubs of New York fourteenth annual Flower Show at Grand Central Palace New York City. Members exhibit table decorations for Spring Summer Autumn Christmas and display living room and mantle pieces. The Federated Clubs report notes eight morning meetings and varied papers by members.
Justice Morschauser of White Plains plans a site visit on Garden road as the village weighs a new water tank for Searsdale. Mrs. Alice Beaver-Webb sues to block the tower stating it would devalue her Garden road property. A decision awaits the judge’s site visit, with appeal proceedings in April in Brooklyn.
The Scarsdale Inquirer announces a forthcoming weekly column on gardens and gardening. The feature will include timely discussions questions and answers photographs and current Scarsdale garden news.
Scarsdale faced heavy congestion last Sunday as northbound traffic along the Parkway detoured via Olmstead Road. Chief Short deployed extra officers and rerouted most traffic to Post Road while Parkway signs proved insufficient for out of town drivers. The Village Board urged County Parkway to adjust detours south of Scarsdale during the Fenimore road bridge construction.
Governor Smith signed the Thompson bill granting towns powers over official maps and planning boards. The act creates official maps, requires plats to fit the maps, lets boards reserve open space, blocks permits for nonmapped structures, and allows zoning variations with map approvals to foster coordinated development.
Tax bills due April 1 show the Scarsdale Bronx Valley Sanitary Sewer levy at 752 dollars and state and county taxes at 5.015 dollars per thousand of assessed value, about 74 percent lower than last year according to Arthur Herbert Scarsdale tax receiver. Hobart advises newcomers to notify the Village Hall office in Scarsdale 91 if bills are not received by April 1.
Mild weather brings several minor crashes in Scarsdale. D E A Charlton of Madison road turned into Edgewood place and touched a northbound Post road car driven by J Philip Derheimer of Bedford Hills. A Post road collision between Oxford and Mararoneck roads left one car stopped and another not. Charles Nichols of Edgewood street side swiped Robert Kirkaldy of Elmsford on the Post road, damaging the radiator and running board.
Fox Meadow Estates asks Scarsdale Village Board to modify the zoning ordinance. Plans by Thomas envision two four story buildings on about two acres between Fox Meadow road and the Bronx Parkway, with twenty seven to fifty four families and a potential for about one thousand if the broader tract is developed. A hearing was requested, noted to continue on page eleven.
Local troupe presents Robin Hood with Maid Marian and Robin Hood characters. Cast includes Mrs Paul Wolff Allan A Dale Ethel Towner Annabel and many townspeople. Morris Dancers and archers join villagers in this community production led by local organizers.
Major General James H. McRae appoints Colonel F. L. Devereux of Bronxville to chair the Westchester CMTC enrollment committee. This marks Devereux’s third year as Army representative for the county overseeing a 30 day Government funded training at Citizens Military Training Camps. Westchester has a limited number of 17 to 24 year olds eligible, with six thousand applicants across the Second Corps Area but space for only forty two hundred students. Applicants must submit a formal form and medical papers early.
Professor L D Cox head of the landscape department at the University of Syracuse spoke to Scarsdale Rotary Club on forestry. The meeting included birthday ceremonies for Harry Tanner of Scarsdale Lodge.
The campaign to raise funds for the children's house at Hitchcock Memorial Church Greenacres reports strong early progress. Trustees say the community and church supporters show encouraging responses as they pursue the substantial goal. A gathering of solicitors and supporters is set for Sunday at 5 pm at the church to report on campaign progress.
Miss Rachel Erwin, director of the Winbrook School in White Plains, will head the primary department of the Institute of Euthenics summer program at Vassar. With a career spanning fourteen years in elementary education and leadership posts in Scarsdale, she joins a course open to all and running June 22 to July 22, described as a study of efficient living.
Edgewood school dismissed as a car driven by Mrs Arthur Driscoll caught fire in front of the building. Firefighters used a few gallons of chemicals to extinguish the blaze and prevent further damage.
A display of projector demonstrations for amateur motion pictures is presented at O'Farrell's drug store located at the corner of Popham road and East Parkway.
The Easter spring vacation in the Scarsdale public schools runs ten days from April 9 to April 19. Classes resume the morning of April 19.
Greenacres Association to discuss zoning ordinance for apartment houses and a parkway crossing at Hitchcock Memorial Church next Monday at 8 15 PM. Everett Jacobs Frederick Close speak for relaxing zoning. William Brewster Herbert McKennis oppose.
Henry S. Richards, principal of Roosevelt High School Yonkers, spoke to Greenburgh Number 6 PTA on Monday evening. He outlined school features including separate gymnasiums two, a quarter mile track, and domestic science room and described music art and college preparatory courses. He explained college entry requirements emphasizing high school standards and raises the need for a strong home education foundation.
Two women were injured in a Sunday evening collision at Knollwood and Tarrytown roads. Mrs. Os car E. Reilly of Scarsdale suffered critical injuries including a broken collarbone and internal damage. Mrs. Olive Wilcox and Howard Wilcox endured bruises and shock. The crash involved a coach owned by Wilcox and a car owned by Salvatore Caleo of Tarrytown, who allegedly ran a green light as he crossed the intersection.
The Water District No 2 fire protection tax will drop to $1 per $1000, leveling with District No 1. A surplus of $17,575.54 from 1926 enables the uniform rate, reducing the overall village tax by about $14,000 if service charges fall to $2.50. The plan, approved by the village engineer, met opposition at a Tuesday village board meeting.
Enrollment for city military-ming camps opened two weeks ago shows over twenty five percent of four thousand vacancies filled in the Second Corps Area. Major David Magowan says Scarsdale boys aged 17 to 24 of good character may join the C M T camps with all expenses paid. The program emphasizes citizenship, outdoor activity, and physical development with boxing swimming baseball target practice and track. Opening camps begin July 1 in Plattsburg Niagara Fort Ethan Allen with sessions through July 30 and again August 5 to September 3.
Last Sunday morning the final trap shooting contest of the season awarded several silver prizes for high scores. W. J. Smith of New York won first prize with 176 of 200. Other top scores: C. B. Chisholm 171, David Magowan 170, Mrs. David Magowan 165, H. B. Hart 162, G. H. Riddle 157, J. D. Lester 157, H. P. Alton 139.
