The Village Board faces a strict budget review with a public hearing April 8 and final adoption April 22. Officials tout a lean plan with no layoffs, limited hiring, and only a six percent tax increase projected, amid shrinking federal aid and rising retirement and fringe costs.
Boine T Johnson won the Scarsdale village mayoralty in a light turnout with 349 votes cast on March 18. Trustees Grady Jensen Jeanne Richman and George Szabad won two-year terms. Judge John M Friedman secured a four-year village justice term. All winners ran under the Citizens Party.
The 1975-76 Scarsdale budget increases the total tax bill to 5,032,534, up six percent from 4,744,557. The tax rate rises to 41.27 per 1000 plus a 1 fire protection charge, totaling 42.27. Village operating expenses total 6,180,012 with revenues projected at 1,089,000 and a 351,000 surplus funding the new plan.
The PT Council, at a March 12 meeting, overwhelmingly rejected an open voluntary lunch program for Scarsdale schools citing budget constraints and risk of educational cuts. Committee proposed improvements including clearer eligibility, more aides, PTA assistance, safety rules, and greater administration supervision. A minority supported the program despite economic concerns.
A public hearing on the Scarsdale Bus Company's move to discontinue regular passenger service is planned for Tuesday April 15 at 8 p.m. in the Little Theatre at the County Center in White Plains. County Legislator Audrey Hochberg announced the hearing and said discussions with county officials are ongoing.
The Village Board of Trustees heard witnesses in an administrative hearing on March 19 regarding Patrolman Roger Geary of the Scarsdale Police Department. He is charged with driving a police car while intoxicated on November 5, 1974, resulting in a collision with a stonewall at 63 Weaver Street. He has been suspended since December. The board will reconvene March 25 to consider further information and make a final determination. The hearing is disciplinary, not a trial, and the State Supreme Court recently refused to stay proceedings.
Scarsdale will name the village park at Popham and Autenreith Roads for Edwin A. de Lima. Mayor Murray Steyer will preside on Sunday March 23 at 3 p.m. with speakers from The Town Club Scarsdale Master Plan East Scarsdale Association and more. If rain occurs the event moves to Fellowship Hall across the street.
The Scarsdale Board of Appeals denied BP Oil Co. a variance for its Heathcote Five Corners service station to operate a Gas and Go and to demolish the current building in a unanimous Wednesday vote.
Multiple crashes in the village injure six persons including Nancy Calderoni a 17 year old from Brayton Road after a March 11 curve crash on Greenacres Avenue. Two other crashes on March 12 and 18 on Mamaroneck Road Palmer Avenue and Quaker Ridge Road also led to hospital treatment for head neck and chest injuries.
