The Junior High Advisory Committee discussed desirable class size in Scarsdale schools noting that the present average is just below metropolitan norms and that 22 to 24 pupils is optimal for attentive teaching. If classes rise beyond 30, individual attention drops and slow or fast learners suffer.
Five Scarsdale teams lead their leagues in the 24th Westchester County Amateur Basketball Tournament at the County Center. Greenacres Globetrotters, Junior Bull Hawks, Hilltoppers, Blimey Boys, and Open Steamrollers compete with Hartsdale Oilers in the Junior Division. Sunday matchups include Greenacres vs Mt Vernon Scorpions at 1:30, Bull Hawks vs New Rochelle at 3:30, Blimey Boys vs North Tarrytown at 9:30, with Hilltoppers vs Mt Vernon Monday and Steam Rollers vs Eastchester Tuesday nights.
Alwyn Ogden of Clarence Road was elected president of the Arthur Manor Association at the open meeting on March 10 at Edgewood School. New officers include Henry Lipman as vice president Ronald Craw treasurer Mrs. William Yancey recording secretary and Mrs Galen Grima corresponding secretary. Four new directors are Mrs. George Buckbee Thomas Irish Fred Spuhler and Joseph P. Anderson. The group adopted a resolution thanking retiring president Mr Anderson for his achievements. John DeWolf spoke on the Scarsdale school status and Mr and Mrs Craw served refreshments.
The regular Vil lage Board meeting moves to next Monday evening at 8 15 in the board rooms at Post and Drake Rd one day earlier than the usual night.
Scarsdale Senior High School's newspaper Maroon repeated as top in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest after study of editions through January 1954. Franklin Myers and three student editors attended and spoke at the convention at the Waldorf Astoria, where 4000 delegates gathered.
The Building Department received two permit requests this week. Applicants are Lawrence Copland of 61 Penn Boulevard and Angelo Da Corta of 1 Penn Boulevard for one family houses.
Loring McMillen, VP of the Staten Island Historical Society and museum director, will give an illustrated talk on Restoration Methods at Wayside Cottage next Friday at 8 15 pm. He lectures as a guest of the Westchester County Historical League with free admission, arranged by Frank McGregor Smith of Scarsdale.
The Health Department announced last week six new chicken pox cases and six measles cases in Scarsdale. Public health officials urged vaccination and caution to prevent spread.
Donald Feldstein, stricken with polio in 1949, is chosen by the Westchester Society for Crippled Children and Adults Inc as the 1954 Haster Page. He spent months in hospital and at home with limited mobility while his mother, Mrs. Feldstein, traveled weekly from Mount Vernon to White Plains for therapy.
As recreation leagues end, several champions are named across grades. Hartsdale Scouts go 8-2 to win the fourth fifth grade A title, Greenacres H Bombs go 7-0 in B, Quaker Ridge Raiders and Fox Meadow Flashers tie at 8-1 with playoff for sixth grade. Greenacres domi nates seventh grade A and B, Globetrotters 8-0 in A, Knicks 8-2 in B. Greenacres/Greenhornets lead eighth grade A with two dates left, Edgewood Jays 6-1 in B. Heathcote Hornets win girls fifth-sixth grade at 8-0, Fox Meadow Foxettes top seventh-eighth grade with 6-1-1 and one date remaining.
Lt. Commander William Martin Yeager husband of Betsy Hodgson was killed in a California air crash while on a routine Yorktown flight. He graduated Annapolis 1942 and served in the Pacific. Survived by wife, parents, two brothers, a sister, and four children.
The story hour for first to fourth graders returns tomorrow at 10 30 in the Children's Room of the Scarsdale Public Library. Miss Nancy E Adams the Children's Librarian will tell three stories. The event occurs on the third Saturday each month with picture book hour for younger children on other Saturdays at 10 30 in the same room.
The Heathcote PTA announces its first Ways and Means party titled Launching of the SS Heathcote for Saturday May 8. Co chairs Mr and Mrs Lloyd W Durant urge turnout for a gala and crucial fund raising for the new facility. Committee members listed include EB John Berlet Mrs James W Foley William Hogan Mrs Stanley W Jones Jr Benjamin Kleigman Myron Linz Nathaniel R Loubet Saula S Meyers Mrs Paul K Smith Henry G Stillgebauer and Mrs H Don Reynolds.
Dr. Roy Craig Swan Jr of Bronxville assistant professor of physiology at Cornell Medical College is among 25 medical scholars to receive a five year $30,000 grant from the Markle Foundation. $6,000 is paid annually to support his physiology and internal medicine research. Swan is a Scarsdale High School Cornell and Cornell Medical College graduate.
Bramlee Heights Association schedules its spring gathering Monday at 8 15 pm in Grace Lutheran Church at Boulevard and Alida Street. Lawrence Labriola, association member, will discuss Spring Maintenance of the Lawn and Shrubbery.
Injury to Richard K. Hebard halted the final round of the national men's platform tennis doubles at Fox Meadow Tennis Club on March 7. Defending champions Donald McNeill and Frank Guernsey led Hebard and James M. Carlisle before play stopped. no play-off date set. The Fox Meadow event drew 48 teams from Westchester Connecticut Long Island New Jersey and New York under Charles W. Barnes Jr. in a strong field with top seeds including McNeill Guernsey and Hebard Carlisle and others from Fox Meadow and surrounding clubs.
A total of 147 Scarsdale citizens voted in the village election this week. Ralph Keating, Willard P. Scott and John Ki. F. Wood were re-elected to two more years on the Village Board with vote totals ranging from 138 to 144 across party lines. Nationwide, Westchester villages saw 11 contests. Democrats gained control in Buchanan and expanded in Croton-on-Hudson and Mamaroneck, while Republicans gained in Ardsley and Irvington and Democrats shifted in North Tarrytown.
A volunteer group of Heathcote School parents will host Open House afternoons for villagers on Saturdays from 2 to 4 80 and Sundays from 3 to 5 during weekends through April 10.
The Greenacres Association dedicates this year’s Basketball Finale to Leonard Starbuck and Stanley Mansfield. Reverend Robert Youngs will read a commemorative poem after the games at Greenacres School Gym tomorrow night March 20. Sal Prezioso Matty Donner and Michael Maloney receive special awards.
O. B. Helffrich of Montrose Road was unanimously elected chairman of the 1954 Recreation Baseball Leagues at a village hall meeting. John Franz chaired the rules committee which reported after earlier consultations. Practice begins April 3, weather permitting, with boys in grades four through ten to register at neighborhood fields. Hyatt Field will host league play for the first time this spring.
The Inquirer reports Scarsdale Red Cross Fund reaches 60 percent of a 37300 quota with 21885 raised. Campaign chair William K. Beard notes hundreds of villagers have yet to contribute and warns that wartime support may waver as Korea ends.
The Scarsdale High School Senior Dramatic Club will stage The Madwoman of Chaillot by Maurice Valency at the high school auditorium on Friday and Saturday March 26 and 27. Susan Leech stars as Countess Aurelia with Lou Lustenberg Van Burgess and Richard Foreman in key male roles. The production features a large cast and a full crew under Jamie Jo Dunn as student director and director John Hemmerly guiding the ensemble.
At the Recreation Basketball Foul Shooting Contest at the High School Recreation Center 12-year-old Jane Lowenstein captured a perfect 15 of 15 in the girls 13 and under division. Over the last three weeks winners include John Canapa Bruce Morrison and Bob Schoenthaler 9 of 15 among boys 13 and under Eddie Kassmel Jack Riviehin and Bill Halton 18 of 20 for boys 16 and under Dorothy Gough 18 of 20 for girls 16 and under Bob Dewey Kent Greenawalt 19 of 25 for boys 19 and under Gingie Stein 14 of 25 for girls 19 and under Awards will be given at the Annual Sports Award Ceremony on April 3 with ties forcing a redraw before that date.
