Scarsdale records 14 to 16 inches of snow as the warm February retreats on Monday. Snow removal crews clear streets, with business districts limited by parked cars. Five wires down. trees withstand weight due to sap flow. Temperatures ranged from high 50s to below freezing across late February into March.
Scarsdale officials and residents gathered at Bordewick's in Tuckahoe for the Democratic County Committee victory dinner honoring President Truman Vice President Barkley and Westchester candidates. Notables on the dais included Mrs. Floyd H Crews Mrs. Sara Bach and others. Truman spoke by radio at 10:30 following Oscar Ewing who criticized New Yorks education and welfare programs.

Allan Cruickshank, renowned wildlife observer and author, will speak at Scarsdale High School auditorium on March 23 under the Scarsdale Audubon Society. He will present all color motion pictures from his travels, narrate bird calls, and share stories from his career with the National Audubon Society.
Last week a fire damaged the Grand Union store awning on Harwood Court in Scarsdale. Fire Department extinguished the blaze with a booster line. damage was slight. The fire was caused by lighted matches tossed into the awning by boys described as juvenile delinquents.
Three accidents were reported in Scarsdale in February bringing the month total to three. None of the incidents caused injuries. The year’s total rises to eighteen.
Senator Pliny Williamson from Heathcote Road denounces the Albany budget battle as a two fold fight. He argues against rising government costs consuming over 30 percent of national income and opposes the Governor’s bid to wield both executive and legislative power over the budget. The senator says line by line changes are unfeasible yet taxes should not rise, noting only one percent of letters support the proposed measures.
Robert Katz of 101 Morris Lane, former Lehigh fencing captain, will help Curtis Ettinger run the recreation department fencing club. About 75 boys and girls attend each Saturday morning at the High School, split into 10–11 and 11–12 groups. Officers are Donald Keller president, Pam Austin vice president, Julia Evans secretary treasurer.
The recreation department shows Heir to the Throne a life story and Princess Elizabeth marriage, and Holi Day Island a film about Canada's Georgian Bay Island this evening at eight and nine in the teachers dining room. Admission is free and open to all.
Dr. Warren Weaver will speak on Science and the Citizen at an open League of Women Voters meeting in Scarsdale. He has a broad science background including engineering mathematics and biology and has served with the Rockefeller Foundation directing natural sciences and agriculture. The talk is Tuesday evening March 8 at 8 15 at the Scarsdale Woman s Club.
The Scarsdale Social Service Council will hold a meeting on Wednesday March 16 at eight in the Girl Scout House on Wayside Lane. The discussion follows a successful recreation panel and aims to present an overall view of county health problems with representation from all Scarsdale health organizations. Names of panel members will be announced next week.
John Saltmann assistant manager of the northeastern division of the United States Chamber of Commerce will speak at the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce dinner next Tuesday at 6 30 p m at Scarsdale Lodge He will discuss the Hoover report government lobbying and the role of the small businessman in shaping legislation.
A. A. Talmage of 25 Walworth Avenue writes Governor Dewey to voice support for Senator Pliny W. Williamson against further tax increases. He argues state costs are rising, opposes diverting $518,000,000 to local areas, and warns of state socialism without venture capital to spur business growth.
Mrs. Carol Lyttle of Rocham beau Rd was elected president of Mobility, Inc at the March 1 organizational meeting. Other officers include Mrs. Percy Landolt as first vice president and Mrs. Berkeley D Johnson as second vice president. The group plans a training program for Westchester County’s physically handicapped starting after April 1. A board of directors was named with 13 members and more directors to be elected later. Miss Doris Beasley will hold office hours at Hewitt Cottage beginning March 7 with inquiries to White Plains number 8 2726.
Requiem Mass for Lt. Frank A. Pezzella RAF will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church tomorrow at 10. He died in action over Sardinia on Feb 29 1944 after 32 combat missions as first pilot of a Marauder Bomber with the 15th Air Force. Surviving are his wife his parents two brothers three sisters and in laws.
The Scarsdale Board of Education postpones the monthly meeting from Monday evening March 7 to Monday March 14 at 8 15 in the high school board rooms Brewster Road entrance.
The Village Board will hold two public hearings at its regular meeting next Tuesday at 8:15 pm in Village Hall. One hearing concerns a village law defining the duties of the village manager, the other an amendment to the penal code designating the Garden Rd and Mamaroneck Rd intersection as main traffic arteries.
Scarsdale reports 1949 Red Cross drive total of 26763 as of last Wednesday, surpassing the Westchester County branch quota by 2158. The local goal matched 1948 at 260000, with final results due March 25.zi
Parents of junior high students are invited to an informal meeting sponsored by the High School PTA in the auditorium on Monday March 7 at three. Miss Frances Smith and Walter Fogg will speak on study habits and the role of school marks. Debates followed by Q and A.
A table tennis singles and doubles tournament and a badminton singles tournament will be conducted for junior and senior high school boys and girls by the recreation department. Entries close March 12. All matches will be at the high school on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. Students should send names and addresses to the recreation department at the Village Hall.

A five week course on operating a 16mm sound motion picture projector will be free in Scarsdale. Limited to 25, it meets Saturdays 10 to 12 at the High School under San Prezioso. Start date to be announced. priority given to neighborhood associations and village groups using the recreation department projector.
The Health Department reported four new measles cases and two chicken pox cases in the village last week, outlining ongoing infectious disease activity and public health monitoring.
Yonkers labor trouble this week matched a warning by Scarsdale Village Trustee Harry G. Liese who urged New York State and federal action on Taft-Hartley. Three Public Works workers were suspended for defying a picket line at the Polish Community Center, and fifteen more refused emergency duty on Sundays. Snow removal and other city services were halted as unions called 500 workers to stay home. Correspondence from Senator Irving M. Ives and Representative Ralph W. Gwinn discussed potential changes to the act and worker sentiment amid national political shifts.
Mrs. Mortimer Rothschild of 79 Hampton Road and Malcolm C Spence of 197 Webster Road are named as nominees to fill two seats on the Scarsdale Board of Education. Elections are set for May to succeed Mrs. Granville B Winthrop Jr and Dr Vincent du Vigneaud whose terms end July 5.

Dr Margaret Mead associate curator of ethnology at the Museum of Natural History will lecture on Life in the Suburbs. The talk scheduled for February 28 was postponed due to bad weather and will be heard Monday evening March 14 at 8 30 p m. Coffee will be served by the PTA at eight o'clock preceding the lecture.
