Parkway Commission Resumes Large Scale Bridge and Road Work

The Court of Appeals ruling enabling New York City and Westchester County to fund Bronx Parkway development allows the Parkway Commission to restart its large scale program. By end of 1924 substantial completion is expected with three paying contracts and five bridge projects underway from Bronx Park to White Plains.

Mrs Raymond Helps Lead in New York State Tennis Championship

In Westchester Biltmore Country Club matches, Mrs. Edward Raymond of Hartsdale defeated Mrs. Samuel H. Waring in a brilliancy at deep court driving. Raymond, listed among the nation’s top ten women players, later fell to Miss Wills, the California contender, who showed improved service and finishing shots to topple the veteran.

Play Day Planned at Mohansic Park in September

Westchester County Playground Directors held their first meeting in White Plains to plan regular weekly sessions and the First Annual Play Day at Mohansic Park on September 15 1923. Aileen Riggan, 220 yard world champion Gertrude Ederle and 30 other Women’s Swimming Association of New York athletes compete at Briarcliff Lodge on Saturday July 28 at four. Notable entrants include Helen Wainwright Helen Meany and Florence Briscoe with Ederle set to race Wainwright in the 150 yard free and a new world mark anticipated. Midgets under twelve also compete led by five year old Anne Kinaly, who recently won a silver cup for swimming and diving.

Shank Car Recovered As Police Seek Harrison Suspects

Citizens form a relief committee led by David Welch in Scarsdale after the July 19 murder of Sergeant John J. Harrison. The Shank car was found in New York City and detectives pursue leads, with a $2,500 reward broadcast and a village meeting set for August 1 to raise funds for Mrs. Harrison and her three children.

New York Ayrshire Record Exceeds State Standard

Mrs. W. A. Read of Purchase New York owns Willowmoor Etta 4th 49 099 the four year old Ayrshire champion. On Advanced Registry test at four years 252 days she produced 157.91 pounds of milk 566.90 pounds of butter fat. In the second month 1832 pounds of milk the third and fourth months over 1700 pounds. She averaged better than 22 pounds per day in the last three weeks of her 65 day record for prize money.

Fox Meadow hosts first women's tennis finals in years

Finals in the Fox Meadow Tennis Club women’s tournament are set after round one results. Semi finals saw Mrs Sargent defeat Mrs Winchester and Miss Bray beat Mrs Fish. Finals will be played Saturday at four o'clock with possible future Women’s Ladder and mixed events planned after vacation.

Costain Exhibits Photographic Studies in Florida and D.C.

Harold Haliday Costain of the Motion Picture World returned to Scarsdale after a five month Florida photographic trip capturing the South’s semi tropical beauty. In Washington, D.C. he attended the forty first National Convention of Photographers where his work earned praise. He displayed Florida scenes and Scarsdale spots and was invited by the Smithsonian Institute to create a permanent display recording a special era in pictorial art.

Scarsdale Honors Sergeant Harrison at Immaculate Heart Rites

Funeral services for Sergeant John J. Harrison were held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Scarsdale. The ceremony featured a multi-agency procession including Troop K New York State Constabulary and the New York Police Glee Club. Community leaders and police officials attended as Father Rourke led the Gregorian requiem and delivered a tribute to the fallen officer.
