Frederick Weat, president of the Eastchester Community Fund, releases a mid year letter detailing a 1948 total of 125 414 19 surpassing the 124 690 goal. By June 30, 69 032 59 was dispersed to beneficiary agencies including Lawrence Hospital and Yonkers Community Chest. The remainder 51 657 41 covers administration and unpaid pledges. Plans for a 1949 drive are outlined with anticipated higher goals due to costs and ongoing need.
Scarsdale Recreation Department announces Boys Junior Davis Cup elimination will be held at the High School tennis courts on Tuesday July 27 at 9 30 a m. Vincent Bellew captain selects a six man squad from 25 contestants with Tom Lewyn and Dick Squiers seeded. The six will compete at Forest Hills August 10 11 12 for the State Championship and then possibly reach the National Championship in Philadelphia August 21 22.
Scores from the Scarsdale Golf Club event show Class A leaders W M Swertinger 84 13 71 and Dr R D Harvey 81 14 67 on Saturday while Class B saw Jay Smith 83 16 67 and Jack Hoover 85 16 69. Sunday results crowned Class A R H Kondorfler 76 9 67 J W Eige 74 11 63 and G A Oliver 82 10 72. Class B winners were R E Thompson 4 22 72 R D Cottingham spare 19 68 and E A Reagan 88 17 71. Odd and Even Tournament went to Jay Smith and H R Weaver 84 17 67.

A $605 877 contract awarded to Grandview Construction Corp. will reconstruct a two mile section of Saw Mill Road Route 141 from Hawthorne Circle toward Elmsford. Work includes forty foot pavement, new alignments, culverts, grading, and detours with traffic cautions for public safety. Private property rights needed will be pursued by the Department of Public Works rights of way bureau.
The health department reported one new chickenpox case and three measles cases in Searsdale last week.
The Scarsdale Post Office installed a Pitney Bowes postage meter to stamp and seal parcel post tapes, letting clerks serve more customers faster. The system uses a credit balance, records totals, and eliminates stamping, with a results-driven time savings noted by clerk F P Neukirch and district manager Robert H Field.
Master Sergeant Frederick C. Saunders son of Mr and Mrs Harry Saunders of 83 Maple Street was killed in an England plane accident two days before V E Day. He was buried with full military honors at Pine Lawn National Cemetery Far Ringdale Long Island.
July 28 deadline set for Aug 4 5 games. Free polo grounds game tickets announced for Giants versus Cardinals with 100 tickets for boys at Ebbets Field on Aug 5. Scarsdale students travel by bus from Edgewood and Greenacres Schools at sixty cents fare. Parents must sign consent slips and send with fare to the Recreation Department by July 28. About 200 youths will attend.
The latest Westchester Historical Society Quarterly Bulletin highlights the Powdermill House in Scarsdale. New society members include Justice Frederick G. Schmidt of Port Chester, Judge Elbert T. Gallagher of Katonah, author H. Allen Smith of Chappaqua, and author traveler Linton Wells of Mount Kisco.
A fifteen year old boy, the third polio case in Westchester this year, was struck July 14 in Buchanan and hospitalized the same day at Grasslands. The County Health Department released the report this week.
In the Scarsdale Tennis Tournament George Jones defeated T Gould 6-4 6-2 and R Dunn 6-1 6-3 and Louis Flaccus 6-4 8-6 to reach the final against the Group I champion. Adele Shumway leads the Women’s Senior group with three wins.
John Barbe, son of Mr and Mrs Walter Barbe of 35 Hamilton Road, arranges music for the Treasury Bandstand Show a coast to coast weekly broadcast. A Juilliard clarinet major, he studied Schillinger at New York University this past winter and formerly arranged for Raymond Scott Elliot Lawrence Hal McIntyre and Joe Dickson. He served in the army arranging for Manila bands and now works with several semi name groups. He favors big band work, believes Eddie Sauter a model, and Ray McKinley’s band as honest.
Westchester scouts prepare for the World Conference of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to open next month in Cooperstown. Five of nineteen senior delegates hail from Scarsdale including Connie Kelly Patsy Roberts Jan Schaible Joan Taylor and Barbara Carpenter. Mrs. Quentin Smith chairs the Westchester unit with committee members Mrs. Walter Roeder Mrs. Dorothy Griffiths and Mrs. Edward Lyons assisting.
August Pic Magazine highlights Bob Wilber's Wildcats in its On Records column with George Avakian lauding Chimes Blues and Old Fashioned Love as standout cuts. The review credits Dick Wellstood and band members Wilber Mielke and Wellstood for a honky tonk lilt and strong solo work.

CARE continues to deliver relief to Berlin despite the Russian blockade. The organization has acquired transport planes to overcome the German capital’s blockade and replenish its stockpiles. CARE maintains large stockpiles in major European cities to fill orders promptly and says donations for Berlin families may proceed.
Scarsdale Junior Legion nine shows a solid record in Westchester County League play with a 7-0 win over White Plains at Scarsdale High. A 3-3 tie with Rye ended after darkness, while a twilight game against New Rochelle was incomplete at press time. Edmund L. Cocks of Cohawney Road is foreman of the special grand jury meeting intermittently since June 1947. The jury, consisting of twenty three members including two women, handles the indictment of twelve United States Communists accused in an alleged anti government plot.
One of the Western Hemisphere's most distinguished statesmen, Dr. Ezequiel Padilla, former Mexican foreign minister and San Francisco Conference delegate, visits Scarsdale seeking rest and health. Renowned orator and proponent of Inter-American unity, he is celebrated for influencing hemispheric relations and a famed advocate at Rio de Janeiro 1942. Continued on Page Ten.
