In response to Scarsdale Women’s Club appeal for a Wednesday half holiday for employees, E R Hunnewell of Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company explains why it is not advisable. He notes the company now runs 15,000 stores and that closing would cost over one million dollars yearly due to full salaries and replacements for managing staff.
New York Central Railroad begins automatic train control on its line and partner rails including Boston and Albany Michigan Central and others. Over fifteen hundred locomotives will operate on nearly three thousand miles with safety device in place after twenty years of trials and ICC approval.
Four residents faced Judge Charles M. Carter in Scarsdale court for unmuzzled dogs at large on the highway. Each was fined $25 as the village enforces a muzzling rule off the owner's property. Other cases were set for the evening session. Names fined include K. E. Charlton, T. Walker, A. T. Jones, and Horace Parker.
Dr Theodore R K Shipherd of the Congregational Church is dean of the Congregational Young People's Conference to be held at Blair Academy Blairstown New Jersey from July 26 to August 4. He is recovering from a sun stroke two weeks ago and may attend only part of the event.
The Union Railroad Company, a Third Avenue subsidiary, paid 70000 for the Westchester Street Railroad Company which serves central Westchester including Scarsdale. The NY NH & Hartford had bid 69000. Plans remain undisclosed. trolleys likely stay until the line is taken over.
Eight members of the Republican Committee of Scarsdale were nominated for the County Republican Committee on Thursday. The town will be divided into four sections with ten county representatives. Assemblyman Herbert B. Shonk presided on July 15 as the nominees included Henry Schwable R. E. Christie Jr George W. Roth Mrs Collin Armstrong Mrs J Larned Green Charles M. Carter George W. Field and A P Colburn. Mr Shank and Mrs William G Gallowhur were elected delegates at large.
Major General Charles P. Summerall announced that 200 outstanding Plattsburg C M T C enlistees will receive an extra thirty days of training after their current course. The War Department authorized the extension to meet demand for advanced instruction for an Officers Reserve Corps commission. Selected candidates come from first year and advanced students and will join the next higher course at Plattsburg Barracks.
John Ross the village clerk says over 200 dogs have not yet been licensed. All dog owners must apply before August. offenders will be summoned to appear before the police magistrate who may impose a $10 fine.
Westchester County officials oppose unbridled growth and emphasize choosing the right kind of development. The address urges restraint and contrasts Westchester with Nassau County, noting Nassau’s rapid real estate expansion and suburban sprawl.
Police Chief Short names Patrolman Harrison in Scarsdale as special officer to arrest or warn owners of dogs at large without muzzles. The Edgewood and Greenacres elementary libraries attract more visitors this summer than the High School library. Sixteen Westchester municipalities issued 7,842,244 in building permits during June, up 2,267,864 or 40.8 percent from June 1925. Yonkers led with 3,104,280 and Peekskill 1,030,850. Scarsdale rose 29 percent. Half-year total reached 57,137,148, a 55 percent gain over 1925. Five towns posted June 1925 declines.
The Westchester County Recreation Commission and Park Commission announce the first county swimming meet at Kingsland Point Park, Tarrytown, on August 14. Events include swimming and diving for men women boys and girls, with facilities for contestants. Park Chambers resident Miss Livingston tore up a July 14 summons for leaving a car unlit on Walworth Avenue but later appeared as scheduled and received a suspended sentence. The week yielded a $15 speeding fine, two $10 fines with three suspended sentences, a left of center violation, and a Brook Street parking offense near Mamaroneck Road.
A new Hartsdale fire siren began operating this week joining a growing array of whistles that awaken the neighborhood at seven and eight each morning. The daily contribution adds to the local soundscape as residents adjust to the updated early alarm.
Mrs. Harold P. Hyatt visiting nurse of Scarsdale and Miss Phyllis Burkett of White Plains escaped serious injury when a hornet sting caused Mrs Hyatt to lose control and crash into a tree on the Park Way near Hartsdale station. They, treated at White Plains Hospital, remained hospitalized through Sunday and were reported much improved though shaken.
Fred L Reis of Hartsdale owns Donnybrook Lodge and says Pointexter Engineering began July 16 work on the Weaver street sewer problem. He inherited the issue from Fred's Fox Real Estate Co. and aims for a permanent fix, meeting village demands to abate the nuisance.
Green Knolls residents favor a New York Central stop between Scarsdale and Crestwood revived from archives. The South Scarsdale Citizens Association approved the proposition after a recent meeting. Petitions will circulate locally, spurred by Fleetwood station’s opening.
The General Honors list includes two Scarsdale students. Donald Evans 27, son of Mrs. Myron Evans of Sherbrooke Road, and Theodore Russell 26, son of Mrs. Vandyke Hill of Ardsley Road, are named among the honorees.
Dr. George P. Coppernail of Bedford Village presents three military orders dated 1811 and 1814 to the Westchester County Historical Society. The medals are directed to Captain Jonathan Miller of Bedford, attached to the 4th and later the 13th State Regiment of Artillery.
Residents of the Greenacres section of Scarsdale are reminded that starting Monday August 2 mail must have a street and number address and be addressed to Scarsdale. Houses must be numbered and a receptacle provided for the mail.
Two crashes at the Walworth Claremont intersection, July 16 and July 9, left both cars damaged but drivers uninjured. Fred Sipp of White Plains collided with Mrs. N S Young. another crash involved Mrs. Robert Updegraff. Obstructed sight lines from a high land and vegetation were blamed. Street officials cut shrubbery but need property owner consent to remove northwest side trees.
The Edgewood Playground reports girls earning 19 games with points led by W. Holley 98 and E. Holley 77 while the boys, juggling baseball, have 11 games with A. Lane 44 and H. Lane 43 leading. John Benedict, director, seeks another set so both teams can begin together. A new sandbox under a large apple tree boosts younger-child attendance.
The Scarsdale Beauty Shop opened July 14 on Spencer place second floor of the Tilrose Building. It features four booths, four attendants led by Miss Marion Pullen with experience from the Ogilvie Sisters, and plans to install permanent waving equipment in ten days. A Daniel Reeves, Inc. branch grocery store opened July 19 on East Parkway, the chain expanding to 542 stores in the metropolitan district under manager Robert Robinson.
Scarsdale Woman's Auxiliary seeks garden surplus for patients at White Plains Hospital. Send vegetables to the Woman's Club Wayside Lane and Post Road. Donations accepted Thursday mornings from nine to ten, when auxiliary members will receive them.
