Village burns 19 diseased elm trees to curb Dutch elm disease

In May and June the Village Highway Department removed and burned 19 more infected elm trees from roadsides and parks to slow Dutch elm disease spread. Highway superintendent John J. Doyle notes last year 88 elms were felled on village land. Property owners must destroy diseased trees on their land or face removal at expense.

Recreation conference to study Scarsdale teen facilities

Scarsdale is to hold a community meeting next fall to assess teenagers recreation resources. Sponsored by the Scarsdale Community Council, the panel discussion will likely include questions from the audience and aim to clarify needs for improved facilities. The 22 member executive committee plans an integrated social service program and serves as liaison among the Community Fund board, its 19 beneficiaries, and 35 member organizations.

Great Mountaineering Feat On McKinley Described

Bradford Washburn calls the ascent of the southeast spur of Mt. McKinley a great mountaineering achievement and second most difficult. Hank Abrons of Scarsdale Harvard senior and six others formed the team with ties to the Harvard Mountaineering Club.

McKinley Spur Conquered by Alaska Climbing Party

A six man squad led by Boyd Everett Jr and including Henry Abrons of Scarsdale completed the first ascent of the southeast face of Mt. McKinley in Alaska on June 29 after a 71 hour storm and perilous snow cave work. The expedition left Talkeetna June 5 and used Ruth glacier base camp for the climb.

Edgemont Pied Piper Wolff Connects With Neighborhood Kids

Bob Wolff, veteran sportscaster, now lives in Edgemont and spends afternoons with local children after broadcasting Washington Senators games for NBC. He recalls meeting a fan who claimed to work for the President and identified as Vice President Richard Nixon. Televising Saturday and Sunday Senator games, taping Monitor segments, and planning future NBC assignments keep him on the road much of the week. He emphasizes fitness and playing ball as his main hobby.

Our Town Acquaintance Visits Scarsdale High School

Boguslaw Lawen dowski a 23 year old Polish visitor who met the Our Town cast in Warsaw in 1961 spoke to Scarsdale High School summer session classes. He stays with the Pauff family and hopes to enter New York University next fall for graduate work. He plans to return to Warsaw if not admitted. He describes himself as socialist not Communist and says he prefers Americans to Russians.
