Yonkers Board of Education to buy Beech Hill land

The Yonkers Board of Education votes to appropriate 17500 for five acres in Beech Hill for a grade school site. A portable four classroom school is favored for immediate use, serving about 150 pupils until a permanent building is constructed.

Patrolman dies after Bronx River Parkway crash

Clifton Cypher a 32 year old Westchester County Park Police patrolman died at White Plains Hospital after a head on collision on the Bronx River Parkway at Butler Road The crash occurred about 1130 Monday night Jacob Meyer 17 of 1567 Fulton Avenue New York City driving a car owned by George Pannamacoor 1514 Washington Avenue also of New York City faces homicide charges along with Pannamacoor in county jail without bail Two seventeen year old passengers in the car suffered minor injuries and were not charged A second fatal crash on Central Avenue Hartsdale last Friday killed Milton Gates a butler for Horace Parker Gates was one of five in a car driven by Harold Doerr of White Plains Doerr and three others were injured and Gates died at the scene.

Stores Close Wednesdays in Scarsdale All July and August

Scarsdale will close stores at noon every Wednesday through July and August. Residents are urged to shop and market Wednesday morning. The move has unanimous backing from the Retail Merchants' Association of Scarsdale and support from the Scarsdale Woman's Club.

Unemployment in Westchester County Figures Released

A preliminary report on Westchester unemployment shows 22 people in Scarsdale able and seeking work. Other towns listed include Bronxville 25, Tuckahoe 109, Ossining 221, Greenburgh 256, Peekskill 265, and several more across the county.

Scarsdale Fire Company No 1 defeated the Yonkers Aces 7 to 1 Sunday afternoon on Butler Field. The Scarsdale lineup featured L Davis W Irish W Short N Lolly W Duhigg E Crane T Van Sloane W Stoots and W Losee. The team will host the Seymour Club of Yonkers at 3 15 p m Sunday at Butler Field.

Detain Driver When Motorist Is Injured

Two cars on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale collided Thursday evening. Walter Brodhead and John Spraver were driving. Spraver suffered a fractured pelvis and other injured occupants were treated at White Plains Hospital. Brodhead was held then released on parole after Spraver began improving.

Tom Conroy of Scarsdale Golf Club and partner finished as runners-up in a pro pro tournament at Sunningdale last week. Jack Sabol of Westchester Hills posted the low gross for the day.

Saxon Woods Hunt Club Holds First Annual Horse Show

The Saxon Woods Hunt Club staged its first annual horse show on Mamaroneck Road White Plains attracting entrants from Westchester and visitors from Connecticut. West Point cadets Chester Derecktor and Miss Mildred Wheeler with Master Louis Wheeler participated, and a dinner dance followed at the club house.

Play Off Finals in July Tournament at Scarsdale Club

In the Scarsdale Golf Club July tournament finals for women Mrs. George Hussey beat Mrs. Charles King 6 and 5 in Class A and Mrs. R A McClelland defeated Mrs. Robert Erskin 6 and 5 in Class B. Prizes included pewter asparagus platters. Twenty eight entries competed in the two ball foursome medal event last Tuesday with half the handicap counted. Mrs W D Welsh and Mrs F R Davis won with a net 90 and received Lalique perfume bottles.

Woman's Club Holds Informal Bridges

The Scarsdale Woman's Club hosted informal bridge games with twenty players on a Wednesday afternoon. Prizes were awarded before tea, and Mrs. Lewis R. Gwyn of Pinecrest Road invited members to join the bridge and tea event on Wednesday afternoon July 23, with reservations by phone.

Eskimo Dog Succumbs In Unfriendly Climate

Dingo the Eskimo dog that accompanied Joe de Ganahl on the Byrd expedition’s return from Little America died last Thursday from nervous distemper. The cream colored, friendly animal endeared itself to the family during its brief stay in the district and officials believe the climate change contributed to its death.

Arno Fund Reaches 3623.36 For Patrolman Arno's Family

Final figures show the Arno Fund netted 3623.36 from a West Chester Conservatory of Music benefit for the widow and her son. George B. Clifton, fund trustee and ticket committee chair, notes no payments have yet been issued. The Village Board will provide the late officer's salary for March through May, funeral costs were 200 from the Workmen's Compensation Bureau, and ongoing support will come from the fund's capital with help from Chief William Short and Mrs Arno as details are arranged.

Woman's Club to Close for Repairs August 1

The Scarsdale Woman's Club on Drake Road will close Friday August 1 for a month of repairs redecorating and renovating. A new heating plant will be installed during the closure. Secretary Mrs William Newman will take a four week vacation as the clubhouse is closed. Activities resume in September.

Capt Hawks Escapes Serious Injury In Wichita Crash

Captain Frank Hawks of Garth Road escaped serious injury after a crash in Wichita Kansas while flying his new speed plane the Mystery S at eighty to ninety miles an hour. The craft was badly damaged delaying his planned cross country flight.

Tools Stolen From Three Greenburgh Sheds

Greenburgh police investigated three tool thefts reported from Edgemont Gardens and Knollwood Acres last week. A Walter Collet Corp shed yielded $150 in tools, another plumber shed in Edge mont Gardens lost $15 in lead and a toolbox, and a third theft from Knollwood Acres totaled $190. Each lock was broken and detectives pursued leads.

Scarsdale considers new movie theater after closure

Residents group working since April says no plans finalized yet for reopening a moving picture theater in Scarsdale. Mrs. F. H. Bethell notes the regular theater closed last week, adds that a committee would approve a contemplated theater and that Scarsdale wants movies.

Blind Corner Blamed For Crash At Sprague And Nelson
