This July 1917 tribute from the Westchester County Census Committee honors women volunteers who completed a county census effort for military mobilization. It commends their dedication, responsibility, and efficiency, noting the sustenance of patriotism and readiness for future service.
The Catholic community marked the church’s third anniversary with a service led by Rt. Rev. W W William at the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Post and Carma Avenue Scarsdale. Parish members including Miss Catherine Crowley Irene McCabe and Miss Marguerite Hanfling participated as organist and speakers in the ceremony.
Westchester County Board of Supervisors met with Chairman Charles D. Millard presiding. County Comptroller R A Parted outlined a June audit and a $14 947 25 county share of motor vehicle fees to be distributed to towns for highway improvements including Bedford Cortland East Chester and Yorktown among others.
Scarsdale held its Independence Day celebration with a morning parade from the station plaza to the Home Defense League grounds where about seven hundred gathered for speeches by Village President Wilson, ex‑President Bethjen, and Rev. Will C. Rourke. The event featured a polished amateur drill by the Home Defense League and Boy Scouts, Russian baritone Janpolski leading patriotic songs, and a Seventy‑first Regiment band performance. Houses flew flags and Town Hall displayed Old Glory and Allied colors.
Walter J Reed and crew describe a three hour fifty minute ascent in an army balloon. They landed in Rowley after a gentle touchdown in a cornfield with a farmer and neighbors greeting them. The group plans to continue to camp by train.
Village trustees continue a packed summer with another weekly meeting on the calendar following recent sessions. Officials aim to address ongoing local issues and ADA compliance matters.
Town Clerk John R. Ross informed by the State Board of Health that dog license fees rise to 2.25 for male dogs and 3.25 for feral dogs. The new rates take effect immediately and notices will warn of additional fees for non payment.
Scarsdale citizens report the Parkway area playground near the station nearly completed and ready to provide boys and girls with organized play. A committee led by Rey A Pritchard coordinates with Lawrence Dunham and director Paub S Sheehan supervising construction. facilities include baseball diamond basketball court swings teeter boards and bars. The site aims for daily use from 9 30 am to 3 30 pm first summer season seeks strong attendance to foster athletics and healthy citizenship.
There is a great activity in the Red Cross work rooms with members dropping in to help. Four shipments have been completed in the last month. three sent abroad are kept for U.S. troops. A relief item list includes pajamas surgical shirts operating leggings slip covers and comfort tags with hot water bag covers. A note from Miss Clair O'Brien praises the effort and mentions English women in a hospital toward the war effort.
Fairy tale pantomimes staged by eight young girls at the home of Mr and Mrs Rob Walker on Saturday afternoon to benefit the Red Cross. Children and adults enjoyed Cinderella Sleeping Beauty and Bluebeard raising over 6 dollars. a wider advertisement may permit a future repeat for more children.
A July 3 special meeting of Scarsdale Trustees discussed contracts awarded to Joseph Cuozzo of Yonkers for sewer additions. Cuozzo’s bid was questioned due to security bond issues tied to an incorrectly calculated estimate by Mrs Gadeazo. The board required Cuozzo to pay advertising costs and engineer charges totaling 250 dollars and to return his 1000 dollar check after resubmission. Trustees also debated the Greenacres Association protest over a playground site on Bronx Parkway, with Bethell urging changes and the clerk instructed to notify the Bronx Parkway Commission. The street department was authorized to prepare grounds for a rifle range use.
July resignation from Village Trustee Fred Lavis was filed but not yet acted on. The board will discuss the unexpired term and the president may appoint a successor if allowed by law.
Surrogate W A Sawyer admitted the will of Lemuel M Hart to probate after a three day contest in the Surrogate Court. The estate is valued near 100000 with bequests to old friends including 2000 to the village blacksmith and 1000 to the village barber. Hart’s brother Joseph Hart of Syracuse contested, but the jury verdict supported the will and prevented any incapacity finding.
