Alden C. Smith of 15 Axtell Drive is appointed chairman of the Scarsdale Bowl Committee for 1969 by the Scarsdale Foundation board. The Bowl honors a village resident for outstanding service and presentation will occur at a January 1970 dinner.
USA NOW led by co chairs Theron Baldwin and Hugh Jones announces an expanded executive committee including Aaron Fink the former Scarsdale High principal now heading to Newton Mass as superintendent. The group vows public meetings open discussion and a plan to bus sixty Mount Vernon students into Scarsdale if needed. Trustee Jackson Browning defends consensus driven Board decisions while Beenhouwer pushes for greater transparency and public airing of issues.
The Public Service Commission filed suit in Albany County Supreme Court seeking forfeitures of 5000 dollars per day for Penn Central's failure to comply with a June 5 order on commuter service. The action notes no response from Penn Central and cites ongoing disputes with a prior Empire Service case, while Ottinger urges immediate fines for delay and Burrows calls for PSC restructuring to improve railroad safety and maintenance.

Scarsdale Public Library will close at 1 p.m. on Saturdays from July 12 to August 30. Summer hours: Monday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Two Scarsdale youths Jeffrey Gifford and John Heney were arrested in New Jersey after police found 15 pounds of marijuana as they left Lundys Lane Hackensack Meadowlands area where weed grows wild. Fourteen youths had been arrested recently for harvesting in the same patch. Gifford the sportscaster's son was released to his father after a juvenile court arraignment while Honey faced Jersey City Municipal Court with bail set at 2500 for a July 22 hearing.
Leonard Howard becomes School Board President replacing Frederick P. Rose, with Mrs. John R. Menke chosen as Vice President. The board rotates the presidency among trustees to share leadership. Howard, an investment adviser and former Lazard Freres partner, thanked the board for the confidence. Menke, a longtime Scarsdale civic leader, has held multiple local leadership roles.
At its July 1 meeting the Scarsdale Board of Education approved a medical coverage change for all district personnel effective immediately. The plan keeps surgical and major medical coverage with Insurance Co. while hospital coverage moves to Blue Cross, aiming to stabilize rapidly rising costs and reduce district premium burden.
William F. Luddy of White Plains was reelected as chair of the Westchester County Democratic Committee at the biennial White Plains convention. Margaret Reid of Yonkers became third vice chair, with Phil E. Gilbert Jr. elected treasurer. May Morgan Robinson of Yonkers made history as the first Negro woman to win a major party Executive Committee post in Westchester.
