Top seed Anne G. Wofford of 9 Wayside Lane won the junior girls singles title at the County Tennis Club last week and earned a spot in the Eastern championships. She defeated Nancy Flint 6-1 6-1 on June 27. Flint and Betty Ann Weber won junior girls doubles 6-4 4-6 6-4. Wofford and Flint join Sally H. William G. Thompson of Larchmont, longtime head of Local Draft Board number 743 in Scarsdale, received the War Department’s second highest civilian honor. The AT T executive, residing at 4 Dundee Road, was cited for establishing high capacity telephone channels linking the War Department with theatre commanders and for restoring Overseas Telephone Services after the war. Thompson, a WWI aviation lieutenant, led AT T Overseas Services since 1929 after joining the company in 1915.
United States Senior Golf Association held its annual tournament last week at Apawamis Chain Rye. Ellis Knowles of the home club won a six way playoff. Scarsdale Golf Club entrants included Byron Fellows Edgar Bowling Henry Hering with scores listed in classes A L C for various age groups.
Loring B. Andrews of Delhi Road was elected president of the Scarsdale Longview Civic Association at its annual meeting held last Friday night at the Greenville Community House. Officers named include Carle F. Rosenburgh as vice president Mrs. J. F. Stilling as secretary and Nelson F. Chambers as treasurer. Raymond R. Beatty spoke on The Towns Real Estate from a Taxpayer Standpoint.
The Edgewood School Parent Teacher Association offered 250 for furniture and furnishings in the principal Mrs Aileen Robinson’s office and the Board of Education accepted the offer on Tuesday night with thanks.
Leonard Steiner of Brooklyn defeated John C. Taylor III of New York City 6 0 6 1 6 1 to win the John Parker Compton memorial tournament final held Friday afternoon at Fox Meadow Tennis Club. Steiner dominated the field with varied shots and strong sportsmanship.
Fox Meadow Tennis Club, undefeated ahead of the final, lost 5-1 to Pelham Country Club when the last match was abandoned at darkness. Singles saw Carver defeat Moses 6-1 5-7 6-4 and Krais beat Hebard 2-6 6-3 6-4, with Walker losing to Jenter 6-1 6-4, O'Hearn falling to Wheaton 12-10 6-2 7-5. Doubles results included Wheaton-Jer nter over O'Hearn-Couch 7-5 6-2 6-3 and Moses-Eaton over Baker-Little 6-0 6-4. The match was decided as Pelham led 5-1 with one doubles unfinished and Hebard-Walker vs. Krais-Carver tied at one set apiece when darkness halted play.
Rear Admiral James M. Irish USN who lived at 6 Taunton Road East from 1941 to 1944 while supervising shipbuilding for the Navy in New York was retired on June 27 by the Navy Department. He later served in Tampa as supervisor of the Tampa Shipbuilding Company and received the Legion of Merit in July 1944 for his destroyer escort production system. He moved from Washington DC and was promoted from captain in September 1942. A 1908 USNA graduate, he has two sons in the Naval service.

The ration note confirms spare stamp ten in book four is valid for five pounds of sugar for home canning. Spare stamp nine, valid for March, remains usable for home canning until October 31. Extra sugar requires these two stamps and cannot be obtained via OPA boards as in previous year.
The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously for a $150 yearly raise for nearly all county workers plus $300 emergency compensation added to base pay. They approved continuing Bar rington Associates, which led a 1945 personnel survey that spurred the increases. Robert B. Stewart said costs run about $230,000 for the rest of this year and $860,000 annually thereafter.
A telegram from Mrs. John Hooker Mooers of Scarsdale Chateaux urged Westchester County supervisors to combat ragweed and reduce hayfever sufferers by directing local highway departments to cut ragweed along roadways. The message was referred to the health department and Planning Commission.

Westchester County received 5195 as its share of income from the new county airport operated by North American Aviation under a concession agreement. For fifteen months ending March 30 the firm earned 70472 and lost 36646 in the first year. Public Works Commissioner James C. Harding cited unsatisfactory operations and criticized management for lacking aggressiveness though noting no material revenue loss to the county.
Dean of Girls Miss Eleanor W. Chamberlin, longtime physical education teacher since 1936, was appointed dean of girls at the junior-senior high school by the Board of Education this week, succeeding Miss Florence Beaman. Superintendent Vernon G. Smith praised her as a superior person with a fine educational background and noted her success in work.
Named Dean Joseph D. Moore will act as dean of boys in the Junior High School next year following a Board of Education meeting. He previously taught science at the high school and met with unqualified success per Superintendent Vernon G. Smith. Moore has been on military leave since June 1943 serving as a Navy lieutenant.

The Board of Supervisors approved by motion an extra 9400 to the county Recreation Commission to handle overflow summer camp applicants. Funds cover food salaries supplies renovations and misc items. Camps will use former CCC buildings at Mohansic Park as temporary quarters for children not housed at Croton Point Park.
Charles L. Reid Jr., a Scarsdale High School French teacher, received a month long leave from the Board of Education this week. He was selected as one of 100 American French instructors invited to visit France this summer by the French Government under the Services Culturels of the Embassy.
Mrs George J Brady defeated competitors to win the women’s June tour tournament at Scarsdale Golf Club with Mrs Joseph P Kasper as runner-up. In a special one day 18 hole medal play on Tuesday Mrs Edward Raymond won Class A with 97 25 72 and Mrs A C Newlin won Class B with 109 32 77.
The Board of Education received a letter of appreciation from Mrs. Albert 5 Swanson, president of the Boy Scout Mothers Club, praising school custodians for their cooperation with the Memorial Day project during its meeting on Tuesday night.

The board also unanimously elected Mrs Wilfred J Brown vice president and George A Marsh clerk. bond plans of 100000 for school improvements discussed along with appointments and renewals.
Archibald B. Shaw was appointed assistant superintendent of schools at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday evening. A Navy veteran since 1941, he holds a Master of Education from Boston University and studied at MIT. He plans to study at Harvard this summer and later at a New York university while serving in Scarsdale. He has nine years as a junior high principal, including eight in Dudley and one in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
Corwin of Church Lane won the 110 Class race at Larchmont Yacht Club’s special regatta last Saturday. He steered the Hubba Hubba to the mark in 5 minutes 37.18 seconds over the three quarter mile course.
