Village moves to curb street signs posters and advertising in streets and parks. Two amendments limit real estate sale signs and business signs, set a 25 square foot cap on lighted signs, ban flashing signs, require off by 10 pm, and prohibit posting and tearing down notices. A February 14 hearing targets the zoning change.
Rotary Governor J Thacher Sears of Glens Falls spoke to the local Rotary Club on the why of Rotary and the value of friendship through the organization. Two new members were welcomed Clarence Varian and George Gulick. Scarsdale Club received a Knabe piano from Dr R B Stanley to be kept at The Tavern for weekly meetings and music.
Arthur Boniface the Village Engineer received authorization from the Village Board last Tuesday night to sell output from the Waste Disposal Plant to Scarsdale Supply Company for one year at 25 dollars per ton. The plant currently handles about 120 tons annually and half of the village waste is sent there while the rest goes to the Eastchester incinerator at about 600 dollars monthly. Next Saturday board members will tour the plant as a cell is opened. Informal talks discussed enlarging Becarri plant at 15 thousand dollars and adding an incinerator for other waste at 10 thousand dollars.
Willard F. Clark of Cooley Realty Co. is the new president of the Scarsdale Chapter of the Westchester County Realty Board. Robert Turner becomes vice president, Morton Reed serves as secretary and treasurer. The group discussed year plans, continued the advertising column in The Scarsdale Inquirer, and noted attending members from local firms.
Mrs P W R Glover of Old Orchard Jane was named and accepted the post of Village Trustee at Tuesday night’s meeting after the resignation of Mrs Joseph Johnson. Glover has long been active in Scarsdale, chairing the Village Relief Work and serving in leading roles with the Scarsdale Woman's Club. She is married to P W R Glover of the firm Barrow Wade and Guthrie in New York.
Four historical papers for Scarsdale are to be read at the Westchester County Historical Society meeting set for Monday evening January 30 at Wayside Cottage. Mrs C W Montgomery presents The Quakers in Scarsdale. Cyril H Burdett speaks on The Old Army Road. Mrs Thomas F Burgess covers Community work in Scarsdale during World War I. William Breitweiser reads a Greenacres Association history. Cleveland Dunn, slated to discuss beginnings of Scarsdale Police and Fire Departments, was ill and unable to present.
A young girl from Rectory Lane brought a partly open dandelion blossom to The Inquirer office on Monday January 23, picked on Crane Road, as a natural comment on the mild unusual winter weather.
Village Board hears list of street name changes proposed by the Planning Commission led by George Clifton. Changes include Carman avenue to Carman road and Sprague avenue to Sprague road in Arthur Manor plus several others across Westover Ferncliff and Searsdale Park with Rossevelt and Nelson road updates.
The first issue, dated January 23, introduces The Scarsdalian a monthly community magazine for Scarsdale Upper Eastchester Scarsdale and Hartsdale. Harold H. Costain’s snow scene graces the cover. Warren W. Cunningham Mayor of Scarsdale is featured in a leading brief biography with articles by Dixon Ryan Fox Ralph R. Ryan Alan R. Chalmers and Clinton S. Leonard.
Two small crashes were recorded. Stephen Herbert of White Plains collided at Brewster and Chesterfield with Elliot Fowler of Bronxville, harming the right side of his car and the front left of the other. A second crash at Crane road and East Parkway involved Peter Canning of Tuckahoe and Delean Troy of Yonkers at eight o'clock Monday.
A plan to create parking space on New York Central property north of the station shelter between East Park Way and the tracks has been submitted to road officers. The diagram shows space for about fifty five cars.
The Scarsdale school term begins with five new High School staff members and one new Greenacres teacher. New High School instructors include Evelyn Austin French and Latin, Jane Sneyd in language, Marion Haff in junior high, Dorothea Shute for junior high, and Mary Ellen Ejidel for geography. Miss Gardiner on sabbatical in California. Esther Robinson to teach first grade at Greenacres. Sixth A grade allowed into high school mid year and semi annual promotions extending to tenth grade.
A bathroom fire at the Bernheisel residence on Kensington road endangered Pegny Anne Bernheisel seven months old and her four year old sister. The blaze started near a clothes hamper by an electric heater, spread to the attic, and was controlled after about an hour. Damages exceed 25 thousand dollars. the family is staying in a Cotswold house during repairs.
Officers elected at the Scarsdale Golf Club annual meeting include R B Marchand as president Philip Ross as secretary J O Hobby Jr as treasurer Howard S Candee as house committee chair and James Baird as greens committee chair.
Receipt of the deed for Fire House Number 3 was reported January 19 and recorded during the Village Board meeting held Tuesday night.
The Greenville Fire Company handled two calls last week a grass fire by Magruder Craighead on Underhill Road Sunday afternoon and a grass fire at Sunningdale Golf Club Monday morning.
Assemblyman Herbert B. Shonk of Heathcote Road was elected Monday in Albany as chairman of the World War veteran bloc in the Legislature. The group includes seven senators and forty three assembly members. Shonk chairs the aviation committee and leads legislation on veterans while also serving on rules judiciary reapportionment and sub judiciary panels.
More than eighty Scarsdale men and youths attended the annual dinner at the Scarsdale Golf Club honoring the Scarsdale High School football team which won all games and scored 137 points. The event expanded to celebrate local athletes including baseball and basketball squads with guests such as John Davis Joseph A. Dugan Andrew Wilson Alan Helffrich and Charles Sinn Clair. Richard R. Hunter presided and presented gold football rings to each varsity member.
A Snow Man Contest will be held by Scarsdale Supply Company for boys and girls if there is enough snow. Four prizes from snow and ice sports stock. Contestants divided by age groups. Judges are Tony Sarg, Clare Briggs, and Rube Goldberg. Photographs used for judging. Final photograph submissions due February 18.
John Page of 50 Brookfield Street White Plains was struck on Fenimore Road by a hit-and-run driver. He was treated at White Plains Hospital for a broken rib and cuts and bruises and returned home after treatment.
Mamaroneck road is shut at Post road for several days this week due to work lowering the drain along the east side of Post road.
Allan H. Richardson leads villagers to enforce dog muzzle and quarantine rules to wipe out rabies. Trustees back stricter measures with police instructed to seize loose dogs or prosecute noncompliant owners. Dr. Ralph R. Ryan reports three cases of rabid dogs in progression, prompting action.
The Scarsdale Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution offers a gold medal for the best seventh grade historical essay. Topic: life of a child in Westchester County 1700 to 1765. Essays ink on one side, no word limit, judged by merit in fact and English.
Walter Hackett's Captain Applejack subtitled An Arabian Night's Adventure returns as the Wayside Players second bill at Dyckman Hall on February 2 and 3. Wallace Eddinger originated the role. cast includes Walter Irvine Betty Jennings Madeline Hollerith Thomas Scofield Marion Keating Linda Wyckoff Kenneth Clapp Robert Chamberlin Helen Payton Douglas Vincent and William Mercer as Johnny Jason with rehearsals underway and scenery in construction.
