The Inquirer reprints statements from the January 12 Scarsdale Village Board meeting on Heathcote Inn debates. Peter W. Quinn notes prior Starkweather and mayoral replies and discusses plan substitutions, board notices, and public hearing records.
Pvt James D McCracken son of Dr Robert J McCracken from Tory Lane remains at the Antiaircraft Craft Artillery Replacement Training Center Fort Bliss Texas for a second eight week basic training cycle. He will graduate in a parade and retreat ceremony and then be eligible for assignment to a permanent antiaircraft artillery unit.
Governor Dewey appointed 12 members to a special legislative committee to draft a code of ethics for public officials and party leaders in New York State. Richard H. Amberg editor and publisher of the Syracuse Post-Standard will serve as vice-chairman.
John DeWolf outlined Heathcote School costs at the Arthur Manor Association meeting on January 13 at Edgewood School. Over 50 residents attended despite snow as DeWolf explained higher per pupil costs due to more square feet per student, extra rooms, small enrollment, and capacity potential.
Heathcote's 6000 square foot auditorium costs about 120000 at 20 per square foot but saves on gym size and adds a proper stage and visual education rooms. Mr DeWolf says the room offers sloping floor good ventilation and acoustics while serving neighborhood groups and elevating school standards beyond older gym auditorium setups. Scarsdale aims for quality over cheap facilities, backed by strong property values and community needs.
Jeanne Mahon and her children Jimmy and Denise, polio survivors, lead Scarsdale mothers in the January 27 Mothers March aiding the March of Dimes. The feature highlights the family’s recovery, gratitude for polio care, and community volunteers including numerous captains and supporters.
Benjamin Nields of Rye announces a bid for the Republican nomination in the 26th district. Incumbent Ralph A. Gamble has not declared. Godfrey Schmidt of New Rochelle will chair a 1000-member Republican citizen committee to back the candidacy. Nields is a Rye resident, Hotchkiss, Yale, UVa Law alum, and former Cancer Crusade county chairman.

Jess L. Geisman of 1186 Post Rd. was elected chairman of the Scarsdale Adult School at its annual meeting on Jan 12 at Leonard J. Kane's home. Also chosen were John S. Snyder as vice-chairman, Evelyn Sullivan as secretary, Henry Lipman as treasurer, Graham Starr Jones as assistant treasurer, and directors Joseph P. Anderson and several Mrs. Hirtz, Kuhn, Slaner, Thies, and Webbink. Reappointments to the staff include Mrs. Be and Sara L. Bach.
Walter D. Rosenberg was elected president of the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce for 1954. An New York accountant and treasurer of Scarsdale Camera Shop Inc, he previously chaired the parking committee and helped craft parking policies. Also elected were Helen Sparks Walter G Korntheuer Albert Torrizelli as vice presidents Helen Braun as secretary and Albert Carlson as treasurer.
The 18th annual Senior Band Concert conducted by Willard Briggs is set for Sunday January 31 at 3 30 PM in the high school auditorium. Admission is free as the event serves the school and community. The program features Handel Tschaikowsky Strauss Herbert and Sousa with solos by John Eidson and Thomas Putnam, a bass section feature, and a drum major twirl by Joan Willians.
Health Dept reports in Scarsdale last week 13 new chicken pox cases and one mumps case, outlining the outbreak and public health response.
The Westchester Conservatory of Music announced a county-wide Music Festival to mark 25 years with five concerts from April to June. Events include the Stradivarius Quartet at Reisinger Hall on April 11 and a May 9 trio recital at Rye home, among others. The celebration aims to fund scholarships and repair the 100 year old building, under honorary chair Mary Douglas.
In a Jan 18 Heathcote PTA session officers were elected: Mrs. Lawrence B. Madison president, William E. Lassiter first vice president, Edna M. Reed second vice president, Mrs. Nathaniel R. Loubet third vice president, Sidney M. Raphael treasurer, and Mrs. Edward C. Reuter secretary. Over 200 parents paid dues to become charter members. Mrs. John S. Voorhees installed officers, with Mrs. Madison succeeding Willard B. Dean as chair.
Fuller and Richard K. Hebard won the Fox Meadow Tennis Club mixed doubles platform tennis tournament on January 16, defeating Ruth Chalmers and Daniel Dyer 7-5 9-7 in the final. Semifinals saw Hebard and partner beat Mrs Schwable and James Carlisle while Chalmers and Dyer beat Mr and Mrs T Edmund Beck. Thomas McGrath served as committee in charge of the event.
Robert F. Birmingham electronics technician third class USN, son of Mr and Mrs James H Birmingham of Central Ave, serves aboard the heavy cruiser Newport News which departed January 4 for a five month training and goodwill voyage to the Mediterranean Sea.
Beech Hill and Greenville mothers mobilize for the 1954 Porchlight Parade to raise March of Dimes funds. On a Wednesday from seven to eight p.m. volunteers will call on neighbors to collect contributions. District chair is Mrs. Charles Kissel with a team of captains and aides coordinating from Greenville Fire House on Central Ave.
Regular meetings of the Village Board will be held on Tuesday nights at 8 15 in the new board rooms located in the building at the corner of Drake Road and Post Road.
The Board of Education and the Junior High Advisory Committee plan a final combined meeting next Monday to decide whether Scarsdale should build one or two junior high schools. Plans for three school sizes, sites, and cost estimates are under review as the group aims to present a bond issue to voters next fall.
Five general headings frame the panel discussion on problems facing Scarsdale over the next five to ten years. The Scarsdale Republican Women's Club hosts the event next Wednesday at 8 30 p m inviting all residents.
Clarence Derwent will speak at a Shakespeare Festival for five Westchester high schools on February 3 at Scarsdale High School. He will discuss Shakespeare's life and work, drawing on his stage career and the book My Fifty Years in the Theatre. The event runs 10:50 to 11:80 with an afternoon scenes program from 1:30 to 3:00 directed by five high school staff.

Mrs. Charles F. Hazelwood chair announces the event to be held at the Girl Scout House Wednesday at 8 15 p m with panelists Mrs. Orison S. Marden Frederick H. Lewis Arthur M. Van De Water Irwin M. Stein and Miss Joan Tunick. The program includes a graphic presentation and audience Q A and is open to the public.
Garth Road participates again in the Mothers March on Polio aiming to top last year’s $638.81 as volunteers from multiple local areas ring doors. With several named hostesses and helpers across Scarsdale Kenilworth and Essex House, residents are urged to donate during the Wednesday seven to eight p.m. event as science nears a cure.
David S. Hall, 17, senior at Scarsdale High School and editor of Maroon, placed third in the United States history awards contest held December 8 at Fraunces Tavern New York. He earned a $509 scholarship after competing with 40 finalists. He previously won first in the Westchester American History examination, receiving a $100 bond for himself and another $100 for the school to buy history textbooks. He plans to use the $500 award toward Harvard tuition in the fall.
Donald DePierro 22 son of Albert DePierro of 106 Fort Hill Rd was promoted to corporal while serving at the Tokyo Army Hospital in Japan He arrived overseas last March and is a postal clerk at the hospital which provides medical care for American personnel in Japan and Korea He entered the Army in June 1952.
