Ground was broken for a modern laundry at White Plains Hospital as part of a $1,100,000 expansion drive. The project aims to serve 3,000,000 pieces annually, support 12 new beds, the enlarged School of Nursing, and future expansion with added equipment and higher enrollment.
Building plans for the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Scarsdale are being converted into reality as ground at Scarsdale and Strathmore Roads is blessed by Rev. Leo W. Madden after Sunday Mass. Workmen begin operations immediately and the structure is expected to rise rapidly.
The Town Club will meet Thursday at 8 15 PM in the high school auditorium to hear a report on introducing automobile driver instruction in the curriculum and an update on the village building code and zoning ordinance. Courtlandt Otis will report on the county budget. 15 new members will be elected.
The Green Knolls Greenvale Civic Association executive committee approved a resolution urging the Eastchester Town Council to renew the Scarsdale Bus Co. franchise for operation on both sides of Scarsdale Avenue. Currently buses travel only one way on the street.

Mrs. Charles A. Perera of 9 Hathaway Road was elected commissioner of Scarsdale Girl Scouts at the annual council meeting on January 11 in the Scout House. She succeeds Mrs. Harrison Ray Weaver and will lead with a slate including first deputy Mrs. Edward Huckman and other officers. The council, led by Miss Muriel Smith, reports 967 girls and 253 adults with 61 percent of potential scouts registered locally.
Otto E. Dohrenwend of 19 Tompkins Rd. New York was inducted as a Knight of Malta at a Waldorf Astoria dinner of the Ass'n of Master Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta U S A. A Baker Weeks & Harden partner and Columbia College 1917 graduate, Dohrenwend has long supported Catholic Charities and local civic causes.
Edgemont School continues the guidance program with Mrs. Helen Glauber as guest speaker. Parents of 7th and 8th graders meet January 24 from 1 30 to 3 00 in the school auditorium, followed by a January 31 session for 9th and 10th graders same time and place.
The Scarsdale Nursing Service holds its annual meeting in the Woman's Club library at eight in the evening. After the business portion, Robert Denvir will discuss the service’s history and scope. Nominations for directors run to 1952 and include several named residents and two-year replacements.
The Greenville Community Council reports rising interest in Edgemont School recreation programs at its Monday board meeting. Attendance averages 90 on Saturdays with 100 plus at Teen Arenas and a peak of 175, while afternoon movies draw 100 to 135 attendees.
The Fellowcraft Club of Scarsdale hosts a tribute to Bill Salter tonight at 8:30 in the Masonic Rooms Harwood Building. Entertainment refreshments and prizes planned as Salter, known in Masonic circles as a former village trustee and current clerk of the Scarsdale Police Court, is honored by committee members Bob Hamlet Fred Bayer Jimmy Daley Charles Bates and George Walgrove.
Eleanor Roosevelt will speak in Scarsdale on February 22 on United Nations work. The event, announced at the Scarsdale Woman's Club and Democratic Club meeting, will be nonpartisan. Various club officers were elected at the january gathering.
A. C. Gedney of Rutgers Place was elected president of the Green Knolls Greenvale Community Assn at the annual meeting held January 16 at J. Feni more Cooper school. Gedney, a textiles broker in Manhattan, has lived in Green Knolls five years and previously chaired the town affairs committee. He has been a Republican committeeman, and served in the Coast Guard Reserve during World War II. Also elected were William C. Stevens vice president Richard C. DeWitt treasurer Mrs Wentworth F. Gantt secretary and John G. Sardi trustee for three years.
Dr Herman Tarnower of Thornycroft serves as president of the new Westchester Heart Association linked with the American Heart Association. Temporary offices will be in White Plains County Office Building until offices are permanent. Andrew Wilson Jr is treasurer and Edward Hochhauser Berton Lattin P C Spencer and Walter M Swertinger serve on the local board of directors. Four new pneumonia cases and three chicken pox cases were reported in Scarsdale last week per the Health Department.
The annual Community Service meeting will be next Friday at eight at the Woman's Club with a buffet at 6 45. Moderator is Ruth Taylor county welfare official. panelists include Reverend Theodore Brinckerhoff Archibald B Shaw and William T Kirk. Officers nominees and directors for 1950 53 are listed. residents are invited and asked to reserve supper seats by Tuesday.
Eastchester Police Chief Kenneth E. Sodon spoke to 50 members of the North Eastchester Civic Ass'n on Jan 11 at James Fenimore Cooper School. He noted most drivers stay under 35 mph per a State Traffic Commission survey and urged highway courtesy to reduce signs and lights. The Eastchester records over the past year showed high solvability of crimes, recovered stolen cars, and located missing persons. The chief also announced plans for the dessert bridge party on Feb 21 at the Cooper School Locust Ave.
Robert BE Delany of Gaylor Road writes in The Bar clay St News monthly church publication. He chairs the Men’s Catholic Action Group and outlines desirable federal education aid legislation.
Public hearing on amendments to Scarsdale ordinances to widen intersections at Madison with Barry Rodney and Tunstall roads as main arteries for 100 feet from each side. Village Board will convene next Tuesday at 8 15 p.m. in Village Hall.
The Scarsdale Senior Orchestra of Scarsdale High School, 37 players, conducted by Francis J. Dezort, performs its annual concert in the high school auditorium this Sunday at 3 p.m. Highlights include Rosamunde Overture, Berlioz Hungarian March, Tales from the Vienna Woods, Kern Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Jalousie, Jazz Pizzicato, Little Brown Jug, and a student conductor debut by Mark Chalat. Lucille Novotny, harp, solos Prayer, with chamber pieces by Mozart and Hasselmans. Admission is free.
The 28rd Edgemont Ice Carnival at Crane Pond starts tomorrow at two o'clock. Tickets bought last year are honored. misplaced tags can be replaced at the ticket committee. Events include potato race, three legged race, parent and child relay, boys hockey, with races for all ages. Boy Scouts led by Scoutmaster Edwin Leonard plan a parade and colors salute. First Aid tent and warming fires will be available. refreshments served. Carnival committee includes Barclay, Shoe maker, Powell, Megilathery, Chandler, Heney, Crouch, McCaffrey, Ford. The event, a community tradition, aims for a fine turnout.
A steering committee was organized at the Girl Scout House to develop a sister affiliation with Wissembourg France. Miss Sylvia Hilton of the Scarsdale Library chairs temporarily. Dr W Paul Allen presided. Participants include representatives from the Woman's Club Scarsdale schools Girl Scouts Boy Scouts Interchurch Council and local officials.
The third round of the Chamber of Commerce sponsored basketball league begins this Friday with games from 7 30 to 11 tonight and 9 30 to 4 30 on Saturday. Standings show John Fennie's Freds 5 and Harold King's Hillsiders tied in 12th grade with two wins each, while 11th graders led by Mike Ward's Village Idiots post a 83 7 33 win and 61 12 victory.
J Henry Neale of 44 Lockwood Road was reelected president of the Westchester County Clearing House Association at the annual meeting January 12 held at the Hotel Gramatan Bronxville. Thomas F. O Rourke and John F Boland were elected to board and vice president respectively. The association includes 26 Westchester banks with resources over 450 million dollars and Maurice Krickl of Garth Woods Apartments serves as secretary.
Robert Craig of Scarsdale will lead the study group for Quaker Ridge School parents on Wednesday January 25 at 3 o'clock. The topic is Sibling Rivalry. Mrs Julian Falk serves as study group chairman.
