Gennaro Iarocchi retired as superintendent of the village Waste Department after 38 years of service. Mayor Alden C. Smith praised his dedication and efficiency during a village board meeting. Highlights included his work with three incinerator plants and a 1949 citation for devotion to duty.
The Scarsdale School Board drops the mid winter recess due to next year’s holiday dates. Lincoln and Washington birthdays create long weekends in 1963. The calendar keeps 184 days and notes early September opening and subject to attendance plans.
Scarsdale Democratic Club sponsors a public forum on fallout shelters and civil defense at Scarsdale Junior High School on Wednesday night January 24. Speakers include Norman Thomas Adam Yarmolinsky Nicholas Rosa Hugh Savage and H Lee Nelson. The event is informational not political.
The village receives a 12 percent foot wide strip along the eastern boundary of the Weinberg property on Mamaro Neck Road through a deed from James N. Rosenberg of 457 Mamaroneck Road. In return he grants a quitclaim deed to a similar strip between his property and the Weinberg site.
Mrs. Bair tells Mr. Chandra from Carita Salon in New York she wishes to be a glamorous ash blonde. The stylist makes the change, captured by John Gass in photos.
Children in Mrs Lorette Sims second grade write to juvenile authors about their favorite books. P D Eastman replies with thanks and a color drawing. Other authors including Ruth Stiles Gannett Lopshire and Virginia Burton also respond with letters and illustrations, showing sincere parent teacher style letter writing.
Police report shows 185 automobile accidents in the year, the lowest since 1955. Two fatalities marked the period, with 126 injuries, and June and November each recorded 20 accidents. December saw a drop of six compared with 1960.
Dr Maurice E Linden head of Philadelphia Health Department mental health division will speak at the Scarsdale Family Counseling Service annual meeting January 22 at the Scarsdale Woman's Club. He warns that aggression in women and rising male passivity fuel many psychological problems today.
Morley Meredith, a Scarsdale baritone praised after a Met debut, will sing at the Hoff Barthelson Music School fund concert on March 9 at Scarsdale Junior High School. The benefit is organized by Mrs Sterling Boos with Mrs Albert Foster as committee chair.
Scarsdale Community Fund president Joseph B. Ullman announced the 1961 drive surpassed its $150,000 goal by 1393.19. The campaign saw 95.6 percent participation in the Scarsdale Greenville area with totals across committees, Pacemakers, and corporate gifts, aided by 1,000 volunteers. A full district report will be mailed next week.
The Scarsdale School Board announced nine fellowships for local teachers to develop materials and methods for ongoing school year projects. The group includes three high school teachers, one junior high, and five elementary teachers, led by Miss Louise A. Mayer of the high school who received a fellowship to develop additional resources.
Scarsdale School Board approved in principle a plan for mandatory sixth grade foreign language study, with Spanish or French to begin then as part of a five or six year sequence. Hope is to expand to elementary level and boost bilingual competence, using language labs and three 30 minute periods weekly. About 450 students now study language. the plan would double that number and may shift Latin enrollment.
At a dinner meeting the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce created a committee to explore ways to beautify the village business district. Theo dore Quale was named chair man with Mrs. Gizi Alton and Thomas Pernice as members to study sidewalk cleanliness and enforcement of ordinances. An anti litter campaign is being considered. Al Carlson and Nick Tryforog co chair the committee planning the February 21 Piedmont Inn dinner dance, where an award will honor outstanding community contribution.
