The Democratic Town Committee and the Democratic Club urge the Village Town Board to remove the $7000 annual salary for the town supervisor from the 1964 65 budget and future budgets. They met jointly at the Crossway Fire House and voted unanimously in support.
More than 1,800 has been raised by about 125 contributors for the John S. Hemmerly Memorial Fund created by the Searsdale Foundation to honor the former head of the high school's Speech and Drama Department. The five member advisory committee will select the first award winner, to aid students in dramatics humanities or fine arts.
A Scarsdale High School group and student leaders urge Rep. Reid to sign a discharge petition to bring the civil rights bill to floor action. They note limited GOP support and contrast Reid’s stance with John Lindsay, demanding visible action rather than lip service.
Dr. Herman D. Stein of Western Reserve University will speak at the Scarsdale Family Counseling Service annual meeting on January 27 at the Scarsdale Woman's Club. Stein, a former Columbia University professor and UNICEF consultant, has led research and education efforts in social work and has authored numerous books and articles.
Thirty two students were inducted into Signifer the Scarsdale High School Honor Society at a morning assembly. Guest speaker Phil Gilbert Ossining outlined challenges today’s youths face. Officers include Ted Levin vice president Cheryl Karpf secretary treasurer, advisor Miss Thelma Fitzgerald.
Town Club special committee recommends the board oppose a fully autonomous Scarsdale Commission on Human Relations for now. Five members split, with three wary of triggering religious or racial tensions and two favoring a limited authority panel under Village Board control. The Democratic Town Committee backs a commission, while the Village Board delays decision for input.
The Edgewood School PTA invites friends to a farewell reception Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Edgewood School gym. Mrs Aileen W Robinson retires as principal to become at American School in Beirut Lebanon. Program leads at 5 p.m. with narration by Mrs Krohn and a piano by Mrs Thomas.
Barry Mangum announces an eight annual table tennis tournament on February 22 at the high school with singles and doubles events for Scarsdale residents over 17. A foul shooting contest is set for March 14 from 9 am to 5 pm for boys in grades four through seven. A junior table tennis championship and a ski development program for seventh graders are also planned, with details to be continued on page ten.
Francis T. Griffin of Rye has joined Scarsdale village staff as head of the Engineering Department and building inspector. He replaces Peter Ferraro and comes from Larchmont where he served similarly since 1953. Griffin holds a Manhattan College civil engineering degree and an S master from RPI 1941 and 1946 respectively and served in the U S Public Health Service during WWII.
Scarsdale village manager Lowell J Tooley outlines a four month process to craft the 1964-65 budget exceeding $2 million. Forms for department heads due by Friday will guide estimates for expenses and revenues from July 1, 1964 to June 30, 1965 as Tooley prepares the village budget officer report. The budget hinges on actual versus planned expenditures and revenue intake to determine the net year end position.
The village analyzes revenues against estimates with a third figure from the assessor to project increases from new buildings. Officials aim to stabilize the tax rate while potential expenditures may require trimming department requests. The Finance Committee will meet with village employees to discuss wage and benefit requests, then draft a tentative budget by February end for board and public review.
