Malcolm A. Macintyre reports the village board will not have the municipal pool open in 1968. Officials will solicit new bids in January 1968 after rejecting previous bids exceeding the $690,000 bond cap. Revised plans cut bathhouse work and underwater lights while trimming depth and deck areas to fit costs.
Postmaster Carden announced rate increases for most mail classes on January 7 1968 with a single new rate for heavy first class and air mail up to one pound at 80 cents. Letters rise to 6 cents per ounce and air mail letters to 10 cents per ounce. post cards move to 5 cents and airmail post cards to 8 cents. International rates stay the same except Canada and Mexico. Special services unchanged except some third class and bulk mail changes.
Scarsdale residents weigh in on American cross border pursuit of Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces. Opinions split on legality and risk of widening the war with responses praising policy, cautioning escalation, or urging immediate withdrawal from Vietnam.
Recreation groups in Prince George’s County Maryland presented Mr Barry D Mangum a plaque recognizing his dedicated service to the youth program. The ceremony occurred in the major suburb of Washington with attendees from local recreation organizations.
Scarsdale considers a general reassessment to equalize village property values. The village board plans to review bids, borrow funds for the project, and may complete the reassessment for the 1969 tax rolls. Official visits and resident briefings would precede any changes.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will stop at Scarsdale Community Baptist Church on Popham Road January 25 from 2 to 7 30 p m. Co chairs Mrs James R Roberts and Mrs B H Young urge donors aged 18 to 59 in good health to participate. A Red Cross doctor and nurse will screen donors and written consent is required for minors 18 to 21 not in the Armed Forces.
Nurses across Scarsdale schools report absenteeism at normal levels after Christmas, with illnesses including sore throats colds and flu. Dr John Cannon says sickness not epidemic and the illness appears mild though investigated by health authorities. He urges parents to keep a sick child home until fever-free for three days before returning to school.
The Scarsdale Hartsdale Chapter of the United Nations Association will hold a discussion titled These Are The Issues on January 10 at Friends Meeting House 123 Popham Road. Topics reflect urgent United Nations concerns such as peace keeping arms control disarmament the Middle East Viet Nam population food resources the sea and human rights with Clarence Edwin Linville as moderator. Dr M Vertner Brown and Mrs Carl S Mueller co chair chapter programs.
A special issue Scarsdale's Year of Progress will be published February 1, 1968. Village organizations desiring a review of their past year's activities must submit articles and pictures to The Inquirer by January 15.
A Scarsdale Village Ad Hoc committee plans to oppose a New Rochelle rezoning on Weaver Street near Five Corners from C-1 to C-2. The Starner property, leased to Colonial Village at Heathcote, Inc., faces traffic and value concerns if used for a shopping center or office building, despite a 75 foot buffer and Starner’s long-term care for the river area.
Village Clerk Ethel M. Hyde says current parking licenses remain valid through January 31. Due to a date misunderstanding some residents received warnings. the issue is resolved and no penalties will be imposed before expiration.
