Village Mourns Former Scarsdale Mayor John K. Starkweather

John K. Starkweather 81, longtime Scarsdale resident and 1943 to 1945 mayor, died after a brief illness at White Plains Hospital. A Brown University graduate and investment banker, he spurred major village projects including a police station, court building, Village Hall, and library site. He also chaired wartime and veterans efforts.

Friends of Parks Plan Forum on Open Space

Friends of Parks in Scarsdale will host a town meeting for residents to discuss keeping or improving open spaces. The April 13 forum at 8 p.m. at the Scarsdale Women’s Club aims to balance competing interests amid evolving official policy.

Ree Program Discussion Scheduled in Scarsdale Parks Meeting

Scarsdale residents are invited to a Parks Recreation and Conservation Council meeting on Wednesday April 12 at 8 15 p m in Village Hall Rutherford Hall to discuss recreation activities. A public hearing on the 1972 73 budget will be held by the Village Board on Tuesday April 11 at 8 15 p m with copies available at Village Hall and two on file at the Public Library. The Board will take final action on April 25. After the annual Friends meeting leaders including Jane Hackett will discuss open space progress and future plans in a session led by Village officials and noted supporters Dr Franklin Ferdon Richard Conn Edward Hand and Mrs Alvin Roberts.

Open Hearing On School Nominating Procedures

The Administrative Committee of the School Board Citizens Nominating Committee will hold an Open Hearing on Tuesday April 11 1972 from 8 15 p m to 10 15 p m at the Senior High School Little Theatre to discuss a method for electing members using six Unit voting machines at the Junior High School and available to voters for at least six hours with tie resolution left to the Administrative Committee.

Sinsheimer To Address GOP Women Luncheon

Warren J. Sinsheimer, Scarsdale GOP leader, will speak at the Scarsdale Women’s Republican Club luncheon at Schrafft’s on Monday April 17. He is a partner at Sinsheimer Sinsheimer and Dubin and leads the American arm of Plessey Ltd. of London. Chairman Mrs John F Cline notes many prominent Republicans plan to attend.

Library Addition Plan Advances in Scarsdale

The Village Board authorized library officials to complete plans for a Scarsdale Library addition costing about 775000. Financing will be via a bond referendum to be held for residents late this year or early in 1973. The project doubles shelf space from 50000 to 86000 volumes and adds seating for 120 users.

Jensen Succeeds Heming As Town Club President

Grady E Jensen was elected president of the Scarsdale Town Club at the April 2 general meeting. He succeeds Charles E Heming who resigned after being elected to the Scarsdale Village Board of Trustees. The Nominating Committee proposed officers for 1972 73 with Seymour A Marrow named vice president and resident elect for 1973 74.

Innovations Mark AAU Road Race in Scarsdale

About 200 runners from multiple states compete in the 15 kilometer AAU road race at Butler Field. The event features women’s Metropolitan championships, a Scarsdale Antiques jogging group, and Scarsdale National providing medals. Runners include Scarsdale residents and entrants from Virginia, Michigan, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York.

Starner Property Controversy Ends in Court Authority

The State Supreme Court in White Plains approved building a shopping center on the Starner Property near Weaver Street New Rochelle after four years of legal and civic dispute. Opponents argued over over intensification and parking while the owner’s rights under zoning prevailed amid procedural court rulings.
