Mayor Harry E B Humphreys Jr presents the 1948-49 village budget showing a tax rate rise of 1,982 per thousand to 11,664. Expenditures rise 87,800 for operations and 49,500 for capital outlays. Revenue from other sources up 16,098. Carryover down 23,098 from 1947-48. Net tax increase 144,300 before public hearings.
The Town Club will hold an April meeting at 8:15 p.m. in the high school auditorium to review changes to the Board of Education nominating system. Laurence B. Davis will report on reforms, including a 15 member voting committee and real property owner requirement for district representatives.
The Village Board schedules its annual meeting for eight o'clock next Monday evening at the Village Hall. Arthur McCain and Harold L. Smith will be seated as 43rd and 44th members. Mayor Harry E. Humphreys Jr. and Trustee Harry G. Liese were reelected. Earle R. Van Vliet was elected for a one year term. others with over terms include Trustees Winifred Hazelwood and Edward Ingalls.
Dr. John A. Krout of Columbia University will address the League of Women Voters of Scarsdale on Meeting the Communist Offensive at the Woman's Club. The luncheon is at twelve with a 1 pm talk due to a 3 pm engagement, and members should assemble at 11:30 for the annual officer election polls.
The village recreation department sponsors a Friday night program at the High School on April 9 starting at nine. After the show there will be dancing to Billy Elmore and his orchestra until 1 a.m. The program features Walter Swertinger as emcee Jim Strauss a juggler George Hull impersonating Al Jolson Joe Hinsey with accordion Dick Kime magic and Jack Moyer and his trio.
Scarsdale Women’s Exchange launches its annual membership drive led by Mrs. Joseph Appel Jr. to recruit present and prospective members. The nonprofit group has operated 17 years with 532 members. 90 volunteers run the Exchange, which features baked goods, specialties, and hand work from 300 local consignors. Members can join by mailing a check to 33 Harwood Court.
A resolution approved a 1500 village budget appropriation to study Heathcote traffic at Crossways Fire House. Another resolution expressed regret over deaths of Mrs. John J. Doyle and Mrs. Karl Wiemer Jr. and notes the unfinished Crossways playground. A survey is urged due to 498 area minors. Election of officers set for the next meeting.
The Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce announces it will enter a team in the Scarsdale recreational softball league this season, signaling community business support and local sports participation.
The Greenacres PTA announces the Spring Festival to be held Friday April 16 at eight p.m. in the "eym" with Mrs. Theodore Hirtz as chair. Square dancing cake walks and games are planned along with refreshments. Tickets are sold by grade mothers or by calling Mrs. Joseph Andrews.
The Drake Road Edgewood Association will hold its annual meeting at 8 15 p m Friday evening April 16 in the Edgewood School gymnasium. A brief business session will be followed by an informal party and dance for new area families. Four new chickenpox and two pneumonia cases were reported in Scarsdale last week by the Health Department.
In Washington on March 16 Secretary of the Army awarded the Distinguished Service Medal to Under Secretary William H. Draper Jr of Scarsdale for meritorious service as Military Government officer and adviser in Europe after Germany's defeat. The citation highlights his leadership as Director of the Economics Division and later Economic Advisor to the Commander in Chief Europe, guiding U S policy in industry trade agriculture and reconstruction and fostering quadripartite cooperation under the Allied Control Council.
The Scarsdale Branch of the American Red Cross will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday April 5 at 10 30 a m in Room 805 Harwood Building Plans for the annual meeting will be discussed Mrs Mildred A Prior is Branch chairman.
Nicholas L. Englehardt Jr. of Bryan Place and John H. Thompson of Club Way will be nominated for Edgemont School District trustees at the May 4 election. Eugene Exman, elected in 1947 to fill a vacancy, seeks reelection. terms for Updike and Benson end in June. The nominating committee includes leaders from Greenville, Edgemont Association, Scarsdale-Longview, Fort Hill, Green Ridge, and the PTA.
Westchester Women's Lacrosse Association begins season Sunday at 2 PM on Scarsdale High School athletic field. Practice continues weekly. 15th national tournament set for May 21–23 at Adelphi College Garden City Long Island. Mentions Miss Betty White president and All-American players including Miss Richey Wheeler Beidler Sheahan.
Lester F. Mills was elected president of the Scarsdale Rotary Club for next year at the meeting held Thursday of last week. He succeeds William J. Irish and will take office July 1. Officers include Harry H. Schlosser, vice president. Robert M. Irish, treasurer. Kenneth L. Metz Jr., secretary. Charles H. Carpenter, sergeant at arms. directors William J. Irish, John T. Flynn, Jerry Dienert. Albert S. Swanson chaired the nominating committee with George W. Both, Arthur G. Bouton, and George W. Walton serving with him.
In a village recreation event at Scarsdale High School, Edgewood beat Fox Meadow 64 16 and Gremlins defeated Edgemont 50 12 while Green Acres won 32 19 and Scarsdale All Stars beat Edgemont 37 20. Semi finals feature Gremlins vs Edgewood at 7 30 p m and Green Acres vs Scarsdale All Stars at 8 30 p m. Movies follow the games: Highlights of the 1947 Basketball Season and the Madison Square Garden Knicks.
With 170 names in the new Who's Who in America edition Scarsdale ranks thirty second among over 3600 U S communities for residents listed. The list names individuals such as Earl F Adams Quincy Adams Walter Aldridge and many others reflecting a broad local representation.

At Easter services Reverend Dr. George Hugh Smyth announced his retirement from pastoral duties after thirty six years of service, effective Easter Sunday April 17 1949. He and Mrs Smyth will remain in Scarsdale where he becomes pastor emeritus. Since 1918 he led growth from nineteen members to about 1800 and expanded church facilities including a new church and parsonage.
Alfred L. Fitzgerald and John G. Kelly announce the Lawrence Hospital Community Memorial Building Fund Campaign organization for the Garth Road area. Captains named include J. M. von Alm en and Olive Murphy with a luncheon on April 10 at 12 30 p m at Village Tavern. Scarsdale quota set at $20 000. solicitation begins April 24.
At the Heath Ridge Association’s second meeting of the year held March 25 at the Crossways Firehouse, Garrison R. Corwin and Edward Tobin of Scarsdale Bus Company answered a flood of questions. The group voted to increase meetings from five to six annually and promised to restore several buses cut from the schedule. Twenty six members attended including Dr and Mrs Renzulli of the Crossways. music and refreshments followed the session.

Eastchester will hold a paper drive this Sunday April 4 starting at 1 PM in Green Knolls Wilmot Park North End and the unincorporated Eastchester area. Paper should be tied and curbside promptly for pickup by LeRoy Gregory Post American Legion members rain or shine. Proceeds go to the Post Building Fund with Robert Paul as treasurer.
