School Budget Hearing Set for Monday Night
Public hearing on the proposed overall school budget for the coming year of 1 421 365 will be held Monday evening at 8 15 in the A B gymnasium Wayside Lane entrance of the High School George H Rutherford president of the Board of Education will preside and the budget will be explained by Robert G Fuller chair man of the board s finance committee The budget increases by 76 142 over this year s costs and includes a 25 000 reserve Tax rate would be 18 014 per 1 000 assessed valuation an increase of 3 349 or 3 50 for a 10 000 valuation home Salaries rise 42 617 while capital outlay climbs 13 000 debt service drops 9 000 maintenance 36 000 and fixed charges 6 000 largely for retirement fund The tax allocation allocates about 66 cents to salaries and pensions 17 to debt service 7 to plant operation Other capital outlay includes 42 000 plus 3 000 reserve under the five year plan to modernize the school plant This compares with prior years of 32 000 51 000 40 000 22 000 7 000 4 000 and 9 000 for earlier periods The hearing will be followed by the Board of Education s regular monthly meeting.

Scarsdale Schools Benefit From Feinberg Milmoe Aid Bill
Scarsdale's school system will gain about 48 000 to 51 000 under the Feinberg Milmoe bill which adds 40 million dollars in state aid based on three years of average daily attendance. The LeRoy Gregory Post 979 American Legion schedules a salvage drive on Sunday April 3 starting at 1 p m rain or shine. Mayor's Estimate for Library and Village Budget Filed
New library and village budget revenues and expenditures for the coming year were filed in the Village Hall by Mayor Harry E. Humphreys Jr. The plan shows higher operating costs and a $62 962 maintenance increase, $4 500 more for capital outlays, and a $7 692 debt service reduction. Net tax raise sits at $33 900 with a $319 per thousand rate bump.

Yale Freshman Lewis S Johnson Killed in Merritt Parkway Crash
18 year old Yale freshman Lewis Starr Johnston, son of Mr and Mrs Charles A Johnson of Scarsdale, died early last Saturday when the car he rode in swerved off the Merritt Parkway and burst into flames. Owner driver Arthur LaCey of New York also died and classmate John Douglas MacKenzie was injured. Johnson had graduated Hotchkiss School Lakeville Conn in 1947 and resided in Scarsdale. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon officiated by Rev James Harry Price.
