The North Central Kansas Free Fair in Belleville ends after a five day run with large crowds at Thursday and Friday auto races. Foster May broadcast to WOW listeners, and 4-H displays, aerial acts, rodeo and Landes Carnival entertainments filled the midway.
Lester Shamburg cashier of a Scottsville bank died from injuries after a Saturday evening auto accident. Shamburg was well known to many in the community.
Er B Frankforther passes away at his Concordia home Thursday afternoon of last week. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church Saturday. He was the brother in law of Mrs Carl Hugos and Mrs Albert Jackson. Elaine Loring visited Naomi Hammer Monday afternoon.
Three boys visit a village hardware store. The gruff proprietor mistakes one boy asking for BB shot for “80” and another for “BB’s.” He climbs shelves, mutters about prices, and finally the trio buys shots with varying amounts. The tall boy is charged a dime, the middle boy a dime, and the third a nickel.
Robert McKimson named Chief Animator at Schlesinger Cartoon Studios overseeing Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes. Warner Brothers Pictures releases the films shown in local theatres.
The town high school reports 80 freshmen 17 sophomores 28 juniors 22 seniors and two graduates. Grade enrollment totals 99 high school students and 108 in grades. Faculty met with Supt Hodges to plan activities. Girl Reserves provided flowers as welcome. The year promises activity in scholarship music and athletics.
Hay fever sufferers faced heightened discomfort as the pollen count at the General Hospital allergy clinic surged to 714, the highest on record. Winds and a hot clear day accelerated pollen spread, following a prior peak of 622 and last reading of 535.
Social notes list several visitors and their cities including Mrs. Jesse Young Harveyville and Mrs. Selma Frankforther Concordia with families from Kansas City Omaha Denver Wichita and Belleville. A later entry notes a picnic supper at the Duane Johnson farm with multiple Lincoln and Belleville residents and their families.
Mr and Mrs R E Downing and Gene of Marion with Mr and Mrs Duane Johnson and daughters enjoyed a picnic supper Monday evening with Mr and Mrs John Heimrich and Dennis of Concordia. Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Ralph Rasmussen for Mr Rasmussen's birthday included Mr and Mrs Will Street and family Mr and Mrs Les lie Rasmussen and family and Mr and Mrs R A Rasmussen. Mr and Mrs Clarence Kathrineberg were evening callers.
Mr and Mrs Charles Hill and family of Jamestown were Sunday afternoon visitors at the Elmer Melby home. Mrs Ole Hanson and Oscar were evening callers.
The Scandia YWCA launches a membership drive the week of September 11. The club invites all women to join, highlighting inclusive membership and cooperation between older women and high school girls. The Girl Reserve club partners with the YWCA as in past years.
L A Melby displayed his corn sample noting ears were large and high quality. He grows about 30 acres of Hybrid corn and estimates a yield of 50 to 60 bushels per acre. He plans to plant more of the new hybrid next year.
Sunday guests honored Joan Swanson and Joan's birthday while extended family hosted at the Swanson home. Several couples from Rand and the Vances attended Thursday suppers at the Paul residence. The Vance party returned home with Miss Vance after a weeklong visit, then hosted additional guests including the Tedrow and Thomas groups and Woodrow Anderson.
P. H. Brown and James C. Brown of Omaha Nebraska were Monday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Berry and Max. Mr. and Mrs. Lars Norgard and Ilene were evening guests there.
Word was received from Miss Jean Hartman former music teacher of Scandia that she accepts a teaching position in the Bothworth Schools in Bothworth Missouri this year She will teach music and English.
Mr and Mrs Walter Berry and sons Max and Albert Berry were seen visiting in Paleo and Zurich on Sunday, describing a family outing that connected two towns and involved multiple generations.
Thirty three boys attend the first practice. Coach Chester Lemr reports the opener versus Republic on September 22 at Republic. Home game set for October 6 against Glasco. Nine lettermen named B White, E Larson, H Larson, L Marshall, Og Nondorf, L Bowersox, M Johnson, A Thompson, E Ball. Scandia also has a night game at Clyde.
The Kansas State Corn Husking Championship will be held near Erie on October 26, sponsored by the Kansas Farmer and Copper Publications. County champions may compete, with the winner and runner-up qualifying for the National contest at Lawrence on November 3.
Jacqueline and Jerry Fuller and their parents Dr and Mrs R L Fuller spent the summer at the Ed Kallman home and returned home to Sugarite New Mexico on Saturday evening. Mrs E L Wilson hosted a dinner at the Coffee Shop on Sunday for E C Wires Blanche Haggman and Andrew Wilson. Miss Helen Westin of Winfield visited her parents over the weekend and traveled with Mrs Westin to Marion for a brief stay with Mr and Mrs Frank Williams.
Wednesday evening guests of Mr and Mrs Ivan Bergstrom in honor of their third wedding anniversary were Mr and Mrs John Bergstrom and Inez, Mr and Mrs Axel Hedstrom and Loren, Mr and Mrs Emil Erickson and Mrs Gustava Ostberg and Ted.
Mrs T A Gritten and Eunice traveled to Hutchinson on Monday for Eunice to enter school. They were with Mr A M Bettis visiting Mr and Mrs Geo Haser and daughters in Hutchinson and with Mrs N S Cooper visiting at the Al Mahan home in Salina.
Tuesday afternoon visitors at Mr May Meade's home included Mr and Mrs Frank Haney Mr and Mrs Ivan Ott from Winfield E A Haney Levi Haney from Boulder Colorado and Mrs Clarence Haney and Elmer Haney of Courtland.
A. B. Johnson brought a mature cotton plant to the office this week. The plant, resembling Deep South cotton, is unusual for the northern climate and is on display for interested readers. Johnson notes he has several plants and welcomes visitors to view the specimen.
The Princess Theatre in Scandia returns Saturday night after a two month shutdown. Manager Mr. Cooper plans weekly Saturday and Sunday showings with Night Work starring Mary Boland and Charles Ruggles as the feature, plus Selected Short Subjects. The town expects a strong turnout for the re opening of one of the state’s best small town picture houses with top sound equipment.
Invitation to Old Settler Day at Alex Scott grove west and south of Norway on Sunday September 10. Picnic dinner and informal talks with In Memoriam for members since last meeting. If rain, gathering moved to Norway township hall.
Mr. and Mrs Axel Nelson and family, Mr. and Mrs Anton Nelson and family, Anton Edlund, Miss Florence Nelson and Anton Lund of Formosa and Mr. and Mrs Paul Fredrickson and Jimmy were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs Otto Nelson and family Friday.
Mr and Mrs J N Woods of Manhattan visited Mr and Mrs W W C Preble and Junior from Friday until Sunday. Junior joined them on a Missouri Iowa trip stopping in St Louis for a baseball game. Wednesday dinner guests included Mr and Mrs Walter Hartenbower Mrs Eva Wakefield and Walter of Douglas plus Clesson McGlaughlin Judy and Kenneth McGlaughlin of Clearwater. Further Friday guests included Mr and Mrs Earl Carrol of Belleville Miss Ruth Elder of Tuscon Arizona and Mr and Mrs Milo Johnson and Elaine. Ed Kallman and Carl hosted a Friday dinner for Dr and Mrs R L Fuller and family Sugarite New Mexico Mr and Mrs Verle Beck and George Edward Belleville Clarence Figgins Republic and Ada Kallman.
Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs George C Larson and family celebrated Gene Larson's birthday. Attending were Mr and Mrs Clyde Norris Mrs Doroth Aspegren of Belleville Mr and Mrs Carrol Anderson and daughters Mrs Ada Aspegren and Norma LaVon Bowersox Harold Johnson and Duaine Robigon.
Miss Genevieve Roth of Jewell visited the home of Mr and Mrs J R Stofer and Louis from Wednesday until Saturday.
Residents are urged to attend a Rock Island Railroad depot hearing in Scandia at 2 PM on Friday September 15. The State Corporation Commission seeks community input on whether to discontinue express mail freight telegraph and passenger service at the Rock Island station, which farmers say would harm agriculture and local business.
The Girl Reserve Cabinet with sponsors Miss Nichol and Miss Reiber met Sunday at the high school to set club policies and plan the pre semester opening events. Betty Jo Cox as president opened with interpretive poems and a committee was named to arrange social welcomes for new girls with a picnic during the first two weeks of school.
Mrs. Anna Nelson died at her home in Concordia at 5 15 Sunday afternoon. She was the sister of Mrs. Carl D. Larson of Scandia. Funeral services were held from Wilson Funeral Home in Concordia and from the Ada Lutheran church at Rackley Tuesday afternoon.
Miss Elaine Loring spent Monday evening as a guest of Mrs. Irene Aaker. The social call highlighted local hospitality and community ties in the neighborhood.
