The Oklahoma Construction Co. of Tulsa and Dallas unloaded their equipment here Thursday and started laying gas mains from Formosa west. The town is full of workmen, many from Alabama and Texas, as the project rushes to completion. Every available room is taken and rental properties are occupied. A second crew operates in Superior.
A 19 year old Swedish immigrant Otto Chellberg travels from Sweden to New York en route to Scandia Kansas. He lacks funds and English but receives a dollar from a fellow Swede to help reach his destination. The journey involves several train changes and cautious navigation of a unfamiliar country.
In Clay Center and nearby areas, Rev. Chellberg recalls aiding a fellow Swede who left Clifton or Clyde by train and was picked up by friends. Chellberg worked a month at Scandia, sent his first wages home, and hopes to locate his old friend without borrowing again. He spent 13 years in Scandia, later married in Omaha, studied in Chicago, and has served churches in Kansas.
Van E. King 21, Belleville's youngest businessman, dies from injuries suffered in an auto crash 15 miles south of Concordia on Highway 81. Rev W A Reese and P H Tobey are seriously injured. six Wichita-area women in the other car suffer scalp wounds and bruises. The report also notes Jamaica ginger sickness fears and a Cloud County court creation by the county commissioners.
Norton plans a Sunday dedication ceremony for the 200 acre Norton Municipal Airport with a 1 PM program. A large air program is planned as preparations continue.
The Norcatur Dispatch notes crowds from across the west will attend with several hundred from Norcatur and nearby areas planning to be present. Airplanes from multiple states will perform stunt flying and exhibitions with loud speakers placed around the field for clear announcements and programs.
