Scandia stores and business houses will close at noon next Tuesday July 4 to allow merchants and employees to attend the I O O F Rebekah picnic. all business will remain closed for the rest of the day.
The Fourth of July marks America's independence declared on July 4 1776. It celebrates patriotism, national ideals, and public ceremonies with speeches, entertainment, and fireworks across the United States.
A new cut-off on Highway 386 between Sabetha and Fairview is planned for this summer. The project covers three miles west of Fairview and four miles on No 75 north of Sabetha, credit to D J Fair for securing the contract after a Wash ington trip. The improvement is expected to boost traffic and assist Kansas northern counties. In a separate note, Miss Hilma Freeman and Mr Jake Stofer Jr were honored at a Sunday evening gathering hosted by Mr and Mrs Bert Haggman and Helen Haggman.

Miss Lyla Loring daughter of Mr and Mrs John Loring and Clark Danielson of Scandia were married February 16 1929 in Salina Lutheran church. Rev J K Liljedahl officiated. Danielson is with Hampton Danielson Furniture Store and Funeral Home.
Mrs. C. E. Kallman was guest of honor at the E. T. Olson home on Sunday afternoon for her 90th birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Scott of Burlington, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Kallman of Rexford, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Verle Beck and son of Belleville, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Kallman, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Kallman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kallman and family, Jacquelin and Jerry Fulled, and Cecil Moller of McPherson who visited in Scandia Tuesday.
Scandia schools announce the hiring of three new instructors for the upcoming term. Luella Ruthman will teach music for grade and high school levels, Carl Clair will lead Vocational Agriculture and Biology, and Otis Rogers will teach 7th and 8th grade.
Rainfall returns three to five inches over the past week aiding corn and pasture growth while delaying wheat harvest. Farmers fear further rain could harm wheat as most is ripe and ready to cut. Charlene Bengtson of Lindsborg visits the John Loring home.
Horse race fans can see a racing picture featuring George Raft Ellen Drew ZaSu Pitts and Hugh Herbert at the Princess Theatre Saturday and Sunday nights. The film follows a gambler who loves gambling and features authentic race footage. Union Pacific comes July 5 6 7 with Cecil B DeMille epic stars Joel McCrea Barbara Stanwyck and Akim Tamiroff depicting the building of the first transcontinental railroad from 1862 to 1869 at Promontory Point Utah.
Community Club committees meet to discuss the annual Scandia Picnic set for August 3 4 and 5 with carnival, tent show, merry go round and side shows. A Booster Trip is planned a week before the event and organizers promise a Humdinger scale program that will outshine larger towns.
The Scandia softball team lost two games in the past week. On Thursday they were edged 18 to 12 by the Belleville Icers and on Sunday they fell 14 to 11 to the Kackley Red Birds.
Scandia hosts a July 4 celebration sponsored by I O O F and Rebekah Lodges with games sports and entertainment. G C Moore of Agenda will deliver the principal address on educational topics. Music by Scandia band directed by Fred Reasoner and an Omaha band. Two dances on the pavement with 5c per dance. Baseball softball and track events plus age class prizes. Public auction July 1 to fund the event.
Noted humorist and poet Walt Mason died at his La Jolla home on June 22 at age 77. He began in a small town weekly, rose to major newspapers, retired years ago, and had been living quietly while contributing poems to a syndicate for readers nationwide.
