Scandia stores and business houses will close at noon next Tuesday July 4 to allow merchants and employees to attend the I O O F Rebekah picnic. all business will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Cut-off on 36 planned between Sabetha and Fairview

A new cut-off on Highway 386 between Sabetha and Fairview is planned for this summer. The project covers three miles west of Fairview and four miles on No 75 north of Sabetha, credit to D J Fair for securing the contract after a Wash ington trip. The improvement is expected to boost traffic and assist Kansas northern counties. In a separate note, Miss Hilma Freeman and Mr Jake Stofer Jr were honored at a Sunday evening gathering hosted by Mr and Mrs Bert Haggman and Helen Haggman.

Union Service Sunday Opens in City Hall Park

Drivers Licenses Open at County Treasurer Office

Scandia Picnic Committees Plan Big 1939 Event

Community Club committees meet to discuss the annual Scandia Picnic set for August 3 4 and 5 with carnival, tent show, merry go round and side shows. A Booster Trip is planned a week before the event and organizers promise a Humdinger scale program that will outshine larger towns.

Scandia Softball Team Drops Two In Week

The Scandia softball team lost two games in the past week. On Thursday they were edged 18 to 12 by the Belleville Icers and on Sunday they fell 14 to 11 to the Kackley Red Birds.

Scandia July Fourth Old Time Picnic Planned

Scandia hosts a July 4 celebration sponsored by I O O F and Rebekah Lodges with games sports and entertainment. G C Moore of Agenda will deliver the principal address on educational topics. Music by Scandia band directed by Fred Reasoner and an Omaha band. Two dances on the pavement with 5c per dance. Baseball softball and track events plus age class prizes. Public auction July 1 to fund the event.

Noted Humorist Walt Mason Dies at 77 in La Jolla

Noted humorist and poet Walt Mason died at his La Jolla home on June 22 at age 77. He began in a small town weekly, rose to major newspapers, retired years ago, and had been living quietly while contributing poems to a syndicate for readers nationwide.
