Record heat mirrors Kansas 1911 with 116 degree peak

The Clay Center Times notes this spring and early summer resemble 1911 with similar weekdays and heat patterns. Through June 8 this year Kansas saw 102 degrees on June 4 and 96 to 102 degree days earlier than 1911, while 1911 peaked at 116 on June 25.

4 H Livestock Tour Planned for Friday

Republic County hosts a 4 H livestock tour on June 23 with Prof J J Moxley from the State College Extension Division teaching livestock judging and Fred Prymek instructing poultry judging A basket dinner is planned at the Kolbaba farm near Cuba Activities start at 8 00 with multiple project demonstrations through 5 00 including baby beef sheep swine and poultry judging Bring your own basket dinner and attend the schedule of judging events and demonstrations by local farmers and Extension staff.

Ford roadster leaves road near Norway injuring Moon

Early Sunday a Ford sport roadster driven by Morgan Hangon and Jack Moon failed to make a turn west of Norway, leaving the road and crossing into a field. The car was damaged. Moon suffered cuts on the head and chin, while Hangon escaped serious injuries. Dr. J. C. Sherrard provided medical aid.

Uncle Eli and Jerusha Take Cattle Money to Chicago Fair

Uncle Eli and Aunt Jerusha sold five cows to fund a trip to the Chicago fair. They aimed for the opening day and attracted a large crowd at the entrance. Eli carried a lunch basket to avoid city prices, joking that Jerusha might get separated in the crowd.

County and State Students Register at Emporia and Lawrence

Six Republic County students enrolling in 248 courses during the first summer session at Emporia Teachers College are listed with towns including Belleville Scandia Courtland and Scandia. Among 82 of Kansas 105 counties represented and seven other states including Arizona California Iowa Michigan Missouri New Mexico Oklahoma are represented. About one hundred teachers taught the classes.

Sheriff Moore Finds Booze in Cuba Raid

Sheriff Andy Moore and deputies raided Wicks Restaurant in Cuba last Saturday evening. They located three cases of home brew a pint of alcohol and 10 gallons of brew in process of manufacture. Mrs. Wicks, operator, was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. She begins serving her sentence tonight.

Petersons in Concordia shootout end in man's death

Last Sunday at Elijah Hughes farm near Concordia a wife’s desertion triggered a fight. Harold Peterson was shot four times and died Monday. Hughes was wounded in the legs but not believed to be critically hurt.

Scandia Defeats Mankato Then Falls to Haddam

Scandia opened with a 5 to 2 win over Mankato in Solomon Valley League action as Irvin Currie connected for a two run homer and Red Simms pitched well. Later at Haddam Scandia lost by one point after a hard fought contest with Logsdon earning two three base hits while Haddam used slow pitching to stymie the home club.

The Kansas Power Company has upgraded Main Street lighting with taller poles and new fixtures. Old poles and lights were removed to improve clearance for large trucks traveling Highway 36.

An order has been placed through Hageman and Wires for two flood lights to illuminate the park south of City Hall for union services. The lamps will provide added light enabling all to take part in the services.

Rev Carl Jensen district superintendent of the Omaha district preached at two Sunday services at the Methodist church and presided at the Fourth Quarterly conference held last Tuesday evening. His home is in Indianola Iowa.

Governor Landon Named Potawatomi Chief and Dedicates Lake

Governor Landon is made Potawatomi chief and dedicates Lake Hiawatha in Hiawatha. The seven acre lake in a 20 acre city park is fed by Camel Springs, supplying city water and enabling bathing below the reservoir. Harry Shetter, a Hiawatha Boy Scout, receives a life saving medal.

Pay to Get In and Get Out Jail Fees Scrutinized

Superior Court Judge W F Harding traveled to Greensboro North Carolina to learn the 1919 statute that allows a turnkey fee of one dollar charged by the Guilford county jailer demanding 50 cents to enter and 50 cents to exit imprisonment in civil or criminal actions. The judge noted no prior awareness of such a fee though the law is supported by public local and private North Carolina statutes.

Kansas Highway Network Reaches Vast Mileage

Kansas shows a vast road system with 8,690 miles under the Highway Department and 132,240 total roads statewide, ranking 12th in the nation for state highway mileage and for total miles of improved highways. Of 8,242 improved miles, 3,643 were built without federal aid and 4,599 with federal funds.

Duane Garman of Courtland charged after a struggle over a pistol. affidavits from involved parties show conflicting statements. Bible School Opens Monday In Scandia At Presbyterian Church

Scandia daily vacation Bible school began Monday at the Presbyterian Church after a plan to use United Brethren facilities changed due to basement access. Fifty five students attended the opening session with remarks from Miss Gayl Tedrow and Rev. D Cunningham. Classes cover music Bible study and handwork with new scholars admitted daily and a closing picnic and program planned.

Bric H. Swenson 78, described as the outstanding man in Clay County, died last Sunday morning. He was a leader in church and business and prominent in state banking circles.

Stolen Dodge TM Six Recovered by Police in Missouri

A Dodge TM Six reported stolen from Topeka was recovered by Liberty Missouri police. The vehicle was found stripped of fixtures and equipment, with most components removed. No further details on suspects or recovery timing were provided.
