Banks Adopt New Service Policy On Checking Accounts

County banks issue a joint announcement outlining charges for low balances and high check activity. Fifty cents monthly for balances under fifty dollars, or under one hundred dollars with more than three checks. ten cents for non-depositors cashing out of town checks over one hundred dollars. Charitable groups are exempt. Drafts and cashier’s checks follow the same rule.

Tragic drowning at Camp Wood during holiday trip

Three Jewell boys faced a fatal accident when John Jenkins, an inexperienced swimmer, drowned while swimming in the shallow lake at Camp Wood Elmdale Kansas Thursday noon. Lifeguards and companions rescued him within five minutes but resuscitation efforts failed. Doctors cited possible acute indigestion as a contributing factor.

Death of John Ridge Follows Hay Rake Incident

John Ridge died mid afternoon while driving a hay rake at his son in law's place as the team bolted into a circle and he fell. It is unclear if a stroke or a runaway team caused the fatal collapse. Glenn Scott notes a recent fainting spell and fears another attack may have caused the death.

Monday evening Sheriff Cecil Smith of Jewell county found one and a half barrels of mash and several gallons of liquor in John Williams home near Lovewell while aiding Sheriff Clyde Wilson of Mitchell county in a search for Robert Angel who left Beloit. Williams is jailed and faces a persistent violator charge under the prohibitory law.

E A Wright of Concordia and R E Bosserman of Mankato acquire Holderness Electric Shop at North Platte Nebraska and rename it North Platte Electric Shop. Wright formerly Kansas Power Company manager and Bosserman in its investment department. They plan to move families to North Platte soon.

Unidentified man dies at Clifton camp park

A man about 45 years old, dressed rough, died unexpectedly at a Clifton camp park last Friday. Coroner Dr. G B McKillvain ruled acute alcoholism as the cause. The man gave the name Clyde Johnson from a near St. Joseph Missouri town, claimed a wife and young daughter, and had no ID on him.

Supreme court upholds Sunday labor law in Bair theater case

The Minnesota Supreme Court last Saturday upheld a $75 fine against Sam H. Bair of Belleville for operating a motion picture show in Mankato on September 29, 1929. Attorneys argued the Sunday law violated religious freedom, but the court affirmed the statute. The report also notes Bert C. Culp shipping wool and wool prices around 17 cents per pound.
