Lutheran School Begins Summer Sessions Here

A two week summer Bible school for Scandia children started yesterday. Miss Hilda Melgren and Mildred Flo Berg of Olsburg conduct the sessions in two rooms of the high school building. Sponsored by the Kansas Conference Luther League, the program serves grade school children with daily sessions from 8 to 12.

Ladies Aid Meeting At Church Parlor This Afternoon

This Thursday afternoon the Ladies Aid will meet in the church parlors. Hostesses include Mesdames Poole Jeande beur DeNoyer Coleman and Loring with a lunch served until 7. Wind and Hail Do Major Farm Damage Near Scandia

A Tuesday night storm brought strong winds hail and rain across Scandia and areas south of Norway. Farms near Paul Moe Gene Nelson and other properties reported damaged buildings uprooted trees and smashed crops with oats and wheat flattened and hay stacks torn apart. Damage extended to trees corn and grass in nearby communities with scattered reports of further losses yet to be tallied.

Rev Charles Pehrson Dies After Short Illness

Rev. Charles Pehrson former Amana Lutheran pastor here for eight years died June 10 in Trinity Lutheran Hospital Kansas City after a two week illness. He retired a year ago and moved to Salina to build a new home. Survived by wife Lydia a sister Bettie Moe of Norway and brothers Pete Norway and Andrew Salina. Funeral at Immanuel Lutheran Salina Monday at 2 PM with burial in Salina Lutheran cemetery.

River Bridge Ad Advertised for Bids at Belleville

The Scandia river bridge on highway 36 is advertised for bids with a letting in Belleville on June 26. Plans show a five span steel deck truss 675 feet long plus five 72.5 foot approach spans, totaling about 1400 feet and an estimated cost of $183000. Construction expected to begin July 20 by the state highway department.

Street Lighting Rates Cut Under New Kansas Power Contract

City officials announce a lower electric rate from the Kansas Power Company for street lights and water pumping. Side street bulbs drop from 1.75 to 1.30 per month, highway 36 bulbs from 1.86 to 1.35. Water pumping costs set at 3.1 cents per kWh first 1000 kWh and 2.5 cents thereafter. Officials say over $70 would have been saved last year with the new terms.

Jim Gunter Succumbs in Corsicana Texas

Jim Gunter died suddenly last Thursday in Corsicana Texas. He was brother of William Gunter and Mrs. Belle Etter of Scandia. He came to Scandia in 1879 with his parents and lived there until 1891 when he moved to Texas to pursue the printing business and later contributed to the Corsicana Herald.
