Carlson presses reform while opposing flood bill in Congress

Congressman Carlson, a busy lower house member, urged restraint on reclamation projects and opposed the Overton flood control bill for a wide Mississippi river plan. He argued to keep the nation’s water under control at the source, noting the bill’s high cost and limited gains.

New Workshop Added to E H Lewis Home

Workmen completed a new workshop for E H Lewis this week. A small screened porch was torn down and a new room erected. Mr Lewis plans to buy equipment to resume shoe repairing, the line of work he followed since his discharge from the United States Army in 1929.

New Girl Star Joins Little Big Shot at Princess Theatre

Sybil Jason headlines the Little Big Shot lineup at the Princess Theatre with Glenda Farrell Robert Armstrong and Edward Everett Horton among the cast. The five year old Cape Town born star rose to fame in London after an instant hit in Barnacle Bill and Dance Band.

Amana Lutheran Sunday Schedule Change

Amana Lutheran will hold Sunday school at 10 a m next Sunday while there is no afternoon service due to Rev Danielson attending the Luther League convention in Herndon. On Friday June 12 Mrs Carl Hammer and Mrs Algot Anderson host the Dorcas Society at the church parlors.

Ada Lutheran Trinity Sunday Services and Luther League Convention

Ada Lutheran Church announces Trinity Sunday events including Sunday School at 10, Morning Worship at 11, and Evening service at 8. The Luther League Convention meets this weekend at Erie Church in Herndon Kansas. Deacons collect conference minutes for fifteen cents before Monday June 8, and Elwood Walter will lead the Sunday evening service.

Freeby's Cash Market owner Mr. Freeby purchased a new Frigidaire refrigeration unit this week to replace the old 20 year old cooling system at the same location. The store interior is being redecorated with green paint and ivory trim to highlight the updated equipment.

Railway officials campaign to win business citing taxes and payrolls

Chicago Rock Island and Pacific officials led by W H Dick and F Nugent spoke in Scandia about a new and improved service to regain traffic lost to trucks. The region will see store door pickup and delivery and trucks come under ICC rules April 1. Taxes paid in 1935 totaled 29 340 75 with Belleville payroll 173 344 69 and Scandia payroll 6 958 50 alongside county and city expenditures.

Republican River Rises to Flood Stage Tuesday

High water flowed from Nebraska into Kansas reaching 8.2 feet, 0.2 feet above flood stage as crest passed at 2:30 Tuesday morning. Highway 14 south of Superior closed after overflow covered roadbed. last year’s June flood caused over 100 deaths and about 15 million dollars in damages across Colorado Nebraska and Kansas.

Memorial Day Service Honors Medal of Honor Recipient

Memorial Day services were held at the high school auditorium with Dr. E P Ahrens presiding. George Robb state auditor and the area’s only Medal of Honor recipient gave an address criticizing war for profits and praising the Civil War for preserving the union. The American Legion Drum Corp led a parade to Riverview Cemetery. A M Bettis, the sole Civil War veteran in the community, could not attend.

Poor Walt Eats Through Banquet With Poland China Neighbor

At a Seneca road meeting Walt Preble sat at the end of a long table beside a heavy eater. The man took Walt's salad bowl and plate, ate the vegetables, cheese, and rolls, then a bun, while Walt endured growing stomach distress. A nearby neighbor tossed a bun at a friend, and Walt finally left the hall in frustration and embarrassment.

A Scandia group met at CG H Freed home to organize a Landon for President club. Mrs R Cameron and Mrs George Mendenhall of the Belleville club led the event. Officers elected were president Mrs C V Hageman vicepresident Mrs Algot Anderson treasurer Mrs Adolph Nelson secretary Mrs Nathan Isaacson. Monthly meetings were set.

Scandia school welcomes two new instructors filling vacancies from the resignations of Miss Christina Hays and Wilbur Miller. Ellis Reinhardt of Bison Kansas takes over coaching and commercial teaching duties, after earning a service degree from Fort Hays Teachers College and lettering in basketball football and track. Margaret Swanson of Byers Kansas succeeds Miss Hays in English journalism and drama, a Pittsburg Teachers College graduate pursuing an MA at Northwestern University with journalism specialization, and she previously taught two years at Luray.

Crider’s Store Looted Sunday Morning Break‑in Report

Early Sunday a break in at Crider’s Cash Store was detected by E C Wires who saw the desk lamp flicker then go out. Gus Isaacson D L Crider and Ruben Johnson investigated finding the back door bar screw driver removed and the store ransacked. Crider suspects an occupant hid in the shop overnight and the robbery began as the doors closed at 12 10 AM. Several groceries including coffee pork and beans tomatoes and corn were stolen or spoiled.

Young Republicans to Hold Two Meetings This Week

The Young Republican Club of Republic county and Courtland will host two meetings this week. In Courtland on Thursday evening June 11 and in Republic on Friday evening June 12 the public is invited. Truman Johnson, chairman, will preside at both gatherings.

E L Shepard of Wayne Republic County announces candidacy for State Senator representing Cloud and Republic counties. A veteran farmer and stockman with 15 years in grain, lumber and hardware business, he served eight years as Republic County commissioner and is urging a strong campaign to reach voters before the election.
