Fire Strikes Belleville Chapel Guts Interior Roof Collapses

Lightning struck the Bachelor Faulkner Dart Memorial Chapel in Belleville last Saturday morning, gutting the interior as the roof collapsed. The fire damaged caskets furniture and equipment, with the adjoining furniture store largely undamaged. The Belleville Telescope to the west suffered smoke and water damage.

Norway Beats Scandia in First Cookie Game

Scandia Cookies lost to Norway 8 to 7 in the season opener at Norway Sunday evening. Jim Melby pitched for Scandia. The teams play at Narka on Thursday June 1. Ernest Heikes manages the Cookie team.

Death of Rene Denoyer in Scandia at age 80

Rene Denoyer a long time Scandia resident died Sunday morning at Public County Hospital Belleville at age 80. He is survived by his wife two daughters Ver mice Cardwell of Scandia and Lenabelle Willis of Colorado a sister Mrs Clarence Strom of Scandia. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Bachelor Faulkner Dart Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Summer Music Program Announces Summer Band Schedule

Starting June 19 the Junior band meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m. The Senior band meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. Private lesson times will be announced before June 19. Lessons are in the high school music room with Miss Pyle.

4 H Cooking Class And Community Notices

The second year 4 H Cooking Class met May 25 at the Warren Johnson home with Mrs. Johnson as leader. Officers were Sheila Thompson president Beth Johnson secretary and Anne Johnson reporter. Lunch was served and the next meeting planned for May 31 at Runft s. The Sewing class met May 24 at the Don runft home with Donna Runft as leader. Members listed include Linda Lindecrantz Sheila Thompson Rhonda Hall Judy Hobson Mary Ann Waite and Anne and Beth Johnson. Various local residents and visitors attended events and a high school alumni banquet was held in Courtland Phyllis Aspegren sang patriotic numbers with accompaniment by Mrs Loring.

Kansas Junior Olympics set for June at KU stadium

The 1967 Kansas Junior Olympics will be held June 9 and 10 at the University of Kansas stadium in Lawrence. Girls compete on June 9 and boys on June 10 with divisions Bantam to Senior. Inquiries go to Supt. Wayne Bly of the Lawrence Recreation Commission.

Beloit Beats Scandia In Opener After Rain Delay

Beloit baseball traveled to Beloit for the opener and fell 11 to 6 to Scandia. Scandia starter Duane Gile and pitcher Jim Nylund worked the mound. The game was moved from Scandia's diamond due to scheduling. More junior baseball coverage will follow next week.

Melvin Jensen Injured in Water Skiing Accident

Melvin Pret Jensen suffered a broken vertebra in his upper back during a water skiing accident at Lovewell Lake Sunday afternoon. He was transported to Republic County Hospital and then to the University of Kansas Medical Center for treatment. Jensen is a local figure and a Standia High School graduate.

At the 29th annual Central Kansas Conference meeting several pastors were reassigned or appointed. Harold Cooper moves to Great Bend New Church in the Hutchinson district, J Orville Bookless to At tica in the Winfield District, and Rev. Lee Dickey is reassigned to Scandia Methodist Church.

Greene slade injured at Rock Island railroad work

Duaire Greenslade sustained a compound fracture of the left hand Thursday while employed with the Rock Island railroad east of Mankato. He was admitted to Republic County Hospital for treatment.

Social Security visit to Belleville Kansas office

A Social Security Administration representative will visit Belleville on Tuesday June 6 1967. Call the Courthouse Welfare Office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for information. The notice mentions a $40 deductible only once during a spell of illness and advises studying the Medicare Handbook for hospital and medical insurance details and the application form.

Veterans notes visit Belleville for veterans service help

Memorial Day Flag Raising by Local American Legion Post

Albert Isaacs on James Larsen Post 193 of the American Legion led a Memorial Day observance with a flag raising at 8 00 a m to begin the annual salute to departed veterans. The post visited six area cemeteries Scandia Riverview Lutheran Courtland Norway Highland and Poplar Grove.

Warrensburg Grad Ceremony Draws 1200 Graduates

Dennie Winfrey son of Mr and Mrs Jewel Winfrey Kansas City graduated from the School of Business Administration at Central States College Warrensburg Missouri Sunday May 21. He attended with his fiance Judy Webb and relatives including Mrs Anna Hohman and Mr and Mrs Bob Pence. The commencement in the football stadium featured Gov Hearn of Missouri as speaker.

Rains Move In To Check Heat Blast

Weather swings from a week of record heat to rainfall and cooler temperatures. A squall line brought wind damage and hail twenty miles west, with .83 inch then .12 inch rainfall locally, followed by Memorial Day clouds and a drying, cooler trend into midweek.

Dismissals and admissions at Republic County and St Joseph hospitals

Ed Anderson was dismissed from St Joseph Hospital in Concordia on Friday. Gottfrid Larson left Republic County Hospital on Thursday after a short stay. Nels Florell was admitted to Republic County Hospital on Saturday and dismissed on Tuesday. Art Jacobson is improving at the hospital. Mrs Athol Scott was dismissed on Thursday from Republic County Hospital. Mrs Eva Stolander is improving at St Joseph Hospital and hopes to be released soon.

Second Republic County Home Economics Judging School Held

The second Republic County Home Economics Judging School occurred Monday May 29 at the Arctory in Belleville with 74 4-H girls judging 9 classes totaling 600 points. Senior leaders include Karen Carlson Jackie Hurley and Dyna Sherwood with scores from 536 to 488. juniors list Sharon Runft Valerie Hadley Barbara Brown and others. The Tri County Judging School is set for June 30 in Concore dia, followed by the final session on July 18.

American Legion Auxiliary Plans June Wichita Convention

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit met May 24 at the Legion Hall with twelve members present. Ethel Modlin reported on Junior Activities and calendars noting birth and anniversaries will be issued. They will sponsor the Blue Ball team, host a June 17 deodor sale, donate $100 for ball diamond improvements, and sell poppies May 27. The next meeting is June 28 with Mrs. J H Cardwell as publicity.
