Norway Girls and Norway Boys Win at Republic County Tourney

In Belleville the Republic County basketball tournament crowned Norway girls champions with a 30 16 victory over Scandia. Norway boys edged Kackley in a tense 21 19 finish after a 5 5 half, then lost a morning rematch 20 19 to Norway.

Methodist Brotherhood hears Jones farewell address

The Methodist Brotherhood met on February 17 at the parsonage to hear Dr. E. Stanley Jones on the radio. New officers were elected: Paul Fredrickson president, Martin Johnson vice president, Noble Isaacson secretary. The next meeting is March 16 at the Joseph Johnson home.

Federal flood control aid for Kansas seen by leaders

Prominent backers including A. Q. Miller advocate a Conservancy Bill in the Kansas legislature. Backers expect passage this session with support from the Planning Board, Agricultural Society and key groups. District cooperation and organized effort are anticipated to bolster the plan.

Moe Estate Sale Near Scandia Next Monday

The John Moe Estate will hold a sale next Monday March 1 at the Moe farm three miles north and one mile east of Scandia. Horses farm machinery feed and seed will be offered starting at 1 00. The Swedish Methodist Ladies Aid will serve lunch.

Our Savior's Lutheran Norway led by Pastor O Torgeson lists Sunday School at 10 with Bible class, morning worship at 11, and the first quarterly synod offering. A devotional program at 7 30, a League social Thursday, and Lenten services led by Rev Danielson. Circuit Sunday School convention set for Manhattan March 20 with Dr Tanner of St Paul speaking.

Class B Tournament Set for Scandia Next Week

The Class B Elimination tourney will be held in Scandia on March 3 to 6 with twelve teams entered including Scandia James town Norway Republic Kackley Formorso Courtland Narka Munden Agenda. Two more teams to be added. Admission 25 and 35 cents. Winners advance to the state district tourney.

Lorentzs Transfered to United at Belleville

Mr and Mrs A H Lorentz long time Scandia Telephone Co workers move to Belleville on March 1 with Mr Lorentz appointed wire chief for United Telephone. Mrs Lorentz will not transfer. Lucille English will become cashier and chief operator. Tedrow Gays day operator Vivian Bettis relief operator and Vernice Swanson night operator remain.

County C E rally and county officers installed at Belleville

Morning worship and Sunday School services are listed for Norway and Scandia churches. The County Christian Endeavor party met Monday at First Christian church in Belleville with a strong church delegation. The sermon quote about Jesus highlights belonging to the Father’s work and invites all to join in faithful, regular service.

Methodist Episcopal Church Week Schedule and Events

The Methodist Episcopal Church lists choir and Confirmation Class at the parsonage this Thursday and Saturday respectively. Sunday includes Church School at 10 AM, morning service at 11, and League and evening service at 7. A silver wedding anniversary reception for Mr and Mrs Axel Nelson follows the Sunday service. Next week Rev L Indlecoffer of Lincoln Neb will lead Victorious Life Week services with multiple evening talks and morning service on March 7. Ladies Aid hosts meet March 4 in church parlors. Cordial invitation extended to all services.

Victor Hoar Takes Ownership Of Scandia Bakery

Mr and Mrs Victor Hoar took possession Monday after purchasing bakery equipment from Ray Chilcott and supplies from Alford Johnson. Hoar brings sixteen years in the trade with stops at Dilley Brothers Bakery in Herington Gillen Bakery in Concordia and a Plainville shop. He promises the community the best in bakery products.

Princess Theatre to Install New RCA Sound System

R E Cooper manager of the Princess Theatre announces a new RCA Victor Photo Phone High Fidelity Sound System will be installed in early March at considerable expense. The upgraded system promises clear full undistorted sound and will allow the theatre to offer modern talking pictures and new shows. Scandia will be among the first towns in Northern Kansas to receive the equipment.

Increasing Interest in the New Soil Conservation Effort

Township Soil Conservation Administration committees continue personal farm visits despite bad roads and weather to collect data on all county farms. Interest in soil conservation is rising with more farmers joining than last year. In 1936 about 1,500 of 2,300 farms were in the program.

Scandia Flickers Headed to Clyde District Tournament

Scandia High's Flying Flickers travel to Clyde for the District Tournament this Friday March 26. Seventeen teams compete with trophies awarded to first through third places. Scandia girls face Riley at 10:30 A.M. Friday. Mrs. Fred Poole visited Thursday with Mrs. May White.

County Grade Basketball Tournament Set for March 13

Through the Scandia Community Club, a county grade basketball tournament will be held at Scandia High School Auditorium on Saturday March 13. Ten schools have been invited including Scandia Munden Narka Norway Kakley Agenda Republic Courtland Fairview Cuba and Wayne. The club will award six trophies with first through fourth place and first and second consolation trophies.
