Jinx on Marriage Licenses Continues in Republic County

Court house notes reveal no marriage licenses issued in Republic County during January and a leap year period. Probate final settlements include the Blackburn estate and Rosene estate while estates of Young and Brandstrom are opened. Criminal docket features cases of illegal liquor, child desertion, property destruction, and the Sigsbee disappearance case.

Kansas Day Celebration Draws Large Turnout In Topeka

Kansas Day events in Topeka attracted about 2700 attendees including many out of state guests. Governor Landon delivered the banquet speech amid extensive media coverage by radio chains and independent stations. The address highlighted national political and economic issues earning strong applause.

Mrs Paul Moe Taken by Death at 84

Mrs. Paul Moe 84 and a longtime resident died at home north of town Wednesday morning after months of illness. Survived by husband, daughter Mrs Jake Storer, and two sons Albert and Fred. Funeral from home Friday at 2 pm and at Methodist church at 2:30 with interment Riverview. Also brief notes on local club meeting and visits.

Weather reports describe three weeks of continued cold with subzero levels causing ground cracks. Snow fell over the weekend covering the landscape, while old timers link severe winters to potential bumper crops in 1936.

Belleville Freshman College adds new teachers

Carl Smith and Raymond Skeels head the Freshman College in Belleville joined by Mrs. Henry M. Skeels and Mrs. Lawrence Berry. More than 40 students enrolled with nine subjects offered in day and night classes.

Farm Auctions Dominate North Central Kansas February Plans

January saw many farm sales in north central Kansas with J R Storer drawing a large crowd and selling 23 horses along with cattle and farm implements. Larson Erickson sale near Scandia drew small attendance due to bad weather, while Carl McDowell sale set for Feb 8 one mile north of Scandia. J W Shotwell acts as auctioneer.

Groundhog Shadow Fails to Appear Forecasts Early Spring

The passage notes no shadow was seen on Sunday and suggests an early spring may follow. It humorously warns residents to stock up on cobs, wood, and coal in case the groundhog changes its mind and predicts otherwise.

Mrs John Johnson 83 Dies at Home in Kackley

Mrs. John Johnson aged 83 of the Kackley community died Wednesday morning at her home after a period of illness. She was survived by three sons and three daughters. Funeral arrangements were not set at press time.

Petition Denied Over Courtland Telephone Service

Inquiry disclosed that free telephone service to Courtland had not been restored as directed by the state corporation commission. On February first the Scandia Telephone Co. filed a rehearing petition, but the commission denied it.

Supt Miller Elected to State Principals’ Office

Supt F L Miller was elected to the four member Board of Control of the Kansas State High School Principals at the Council of Administrations meeting of the Kansas State Teachers Assn in Wichita. Other new members are W W Waring Salina High School and W R Frazer McPherson High School. Miller also joined the Kansas Educators' Club as one of 12 chosen for this year.

Throbeck Dies at Concordia Hospital

John Tobias Throbeck, 51, died Tuesday at Concordia Hospital after a long illness and pneumonia. He lived east of Norway, with survivors including brother George and sisters Mrs. P. L. Ss Hammett of Norway, Miss Louise Throbeck, and Mrs. Edw. Nelson of Wyoming. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the family home by Rev. B. W. Selin of Scandia, with interment in Norway cemetery.

Fire in Belleville destroys Rock Island station

A fire at the Rock Island station in Belleville on Monday night burned the waiting room baggage room and express station completely. Firefighters battled the blaze as the building suffered total loss with extensive smoke and heat damage reported.

Town Teams Lose Four Games In Past Week

Both boys and girls town teams were defeated at Concordia last Wednesday with close scores 24 22 for the girls and 27 26 for the boys. Thursday the two boys teams lost again at Montrose. Monday games on the local court were canceled due to bad weather affecting Norway boys and Republic girls.
