Sanborns Big Slogan Contest Ends With Ten Winners

Mrs Walter Coonrad of Narka won first place and a Maytag Washing Machine in Sanborns slogan contest ending Saturday December 24. Ten prizes were awarded from about 40 000 coupons. winners included Mrs Don Boswell Belleville and Robert Harroun Belleville with varied prizes.

Obedient Postmaster of Scandia Receives Toasts

Scandia residents praise Sherman English for five years as postmaster handling peak mail volume. He routinely works long hours from 5 30 am and sometimes until 9 pm, earning commendation for dedication and cordial service. Genevieve Freed visited her parents Mr and Mrs C H Freed over Christmas and returned to Topeka with sister June en route to Manhattan after New Year.

Union Prayer Week Begins In Scandia Churches

The churches of Scandia invite all residents to union prayer services. The first service is next Sunday at 7 30 p m in the United Brethren Church. Meetings continue through the week at Union locations with Rev J C Everett delivering the message at the opening service.

Norway and Scandia Sunday Schools host morning sessions at 10 a.m. with preaching at 11 a.m. Evening services join the Week of Prayer nights from Jan 1 to 8, except Saturday, in various churches. All welcome to attend for spiritual renewal. Ladies Aid meets Tuesday at 2 p.m. with pot luck. Otterbein Guild gathers Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the parsonage.

Minister Joseph E. Englund invites all ages to Sunday School at 10 a m and Morning Worship at 11 a m with choir music. Sermon title Who Shall Preach the Best Sermon of 1939. Fortune magazine finds half of American adults favor a comic strip with Little Orphan Annie topping popularity. Ann Gillis plays Annie in the film at Princess Theatre this weekend. Lincoln couple announce engagement in spring wedding

Mr and Mrs John Scott of Lincoln Nebraska announce the engagement of their daughter June to Edwin White oldest son of Mrs Theresa McDowell and grandson of Mrs May White of Scandia The nuptials are planned for early spring. The announcement appeared in the Lincoln Sunday Journal and Star with Miss Scott’s picture.

Kansas Motor Vehicle Deaths Drop in 1938 to December

Kansas reports 401 motor vehicle deaths through December 1, down from 460 the year before, a 59 life decrease in 1938 compared with 1937. November deaths totaled 39 versus 46 last November as patrols intensify efforts to make the holidays safer and curb accidents.

John Hooker Tops as a Fire Fighter at Sanborn Lumber

A general holiday fire incident at Sanborn Lumber Company shows John Hooker, manager of operations, quickly detecting smoke. He used a ladder and attic access to reach the blaze near the stove pipe, then personally fought the flames with an extinguisher for about 30 minutes until fire crews arrived, averting a disaster.

Absent Minded Professors and Santa at Crider’s Store

Final Prizes Awarded Saturday in Scandia Contest

Jane Ewing won the $5 prize for the window display vote with a near total value guess. Duane Greenslade took first in best decorated home, with K V Cox and Guy Frazier earning cash prizes. Additional December 1921 and 21-24 prizes were awarded to local merchants and residents. Santa Claus rode through Main Street on a truck delivering treats to about 350 children.

Porky Johnson Reels In A Fine Mink Then Rescues Pet Dog

Marnard Johnson known as Porky the Trapper found a fine mink last week, value high beyond ordinary estimates. The next day he rescued his dog Jiggs from a trap, a non monetary but priceless relief for the boy who traps for fun and funds.

John Schlutow of Belleville, chairman of the Republican Central Committee, visited Scandia last week while connected with the Sovereign Service Company. Myron McGregor spent Friday evening at the M. E. McGregor home.
