Local Window Display Vote Totals Tallied

The city tallies 987 guessing votes for window displays last week with total display value $619.55. Winners include C C Berggren, Lawrence Nelson, Miss Verna Wallin, Rob Thompson, Mrs Ottina Larson, Adolph Nelson, Mary Johnson, and Mrs Art Jacobson for various prize amounts. Votes close Saturday December 24 at 3 00 pm with three prizes awarded that evening after counting.

Scandia teams faced Cuba on Monday night losing all three. Second team fell 23 to 5, Flying Flickers were defeated 36 to 4, and the first team lost 30 to 26.

Union Observance Of The Week Of Prayer

The Week of Prayer is observed through Christendom during the first week of the new year. In Scandia the Christian community unites with meetings at United Brethren on Sunday and Monday, Presbyterian on Tue Thu, and Methodist on Fri and Sun. Services begin 7:30 p.m. except Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Special music and local pastors will preach. All are invited to join in prayers for community country and mankind. Mr and Mrs John Musgrace of Ellis spent Christmas with Mr and Mrs D L Crider and Gloria.

Jewell County Farm Loan Association to Meet January 17 1939

Jewell County National Farm Loan Association stockholders will hold their annual meeting in Courtland on January 17 1939. President L M Bothwell says the program centers on the farm loan’s role in local agricultural development. Directors Bucknell Ferguson Balch Davis and secretary treasurer Parker serve on the program committee and attendance committee aims for full membership.

Conservation Broad Cast Addresses Conservancy Bill

Kansas districts plan an hour long broadcast January 5 at 9 00 p m with speakers outlining facts about the Conservancy Bill. The program aims to educate farmers businessmen and all Kansas citizens on soil and water conservation as essential to preserving agricultural assets. Mr and Mrs H E Rosene visited Belleville Monday.

Unique Cartoon From Our Family of Artists

The front page features an original cartoon drawn by our eldest son who works as a cartoonist for a major California studio. Two other sons also create animation art in Hollywood studios, and our two daughters are artistically inclined though studios do not hire women for this work.

Country Girl play thrills crowd at Scandia High

The Rebecca I O F and Odd Fellows staged The Country Girl at Scandia High School Auditorium. Charles Cardwell played Bud Weston with Ada Jeandebeur as Melvina Perkins, and Vernon Holmes portrayed Jay Crest the city slicker seeking the mineral spring farm owned by Widow Weston. The audience filled the house.

The Journal notes Volume 69, Number 1 and its long history since the Indian era and settlement. The editor reflects on the paper's enduring presence, community standing, and readers in its trade territory as Christmas and New Year wishes are extended along with a call for cooperation to remain a leading Kansas country weekly.

Excellent Christmas Musicale in Scandia High Notes

The Christmas Musicale in tableaux and carols, staged by Scandia Public Schools Tuesday in the school auditorium, drew praise as one of the best. Director Miss Jean Hartman led the program with pianist Miss Alice Nelson. teachers Ruby Johnson Esther Sjogren Evelyn Neander and Mr Herbert Shde trained the students. High school soloists Jean Clark Eldred Freed Bud Swanson Fern Thomas Marceline and Maxine Perry sang. Paul Albro played a cornet. readers were Orville Nondorf and Richard Fogelberg. Ruby Johnson painted Bethlehem for tableaux featuring Fern Thomas Leo Jernason Lucille Devel Arlene Servoll Audrey Thompson Wendell Rydwall Norma Greenslade Valjean Jackson Dwaine Robison Maurice Freed Richard Lewellyn Allen Larcon Max Thompson Junior Cady Norman Leckberg. chorus and high school orchestra supplemented the performances.
