High clubs sing carols for shut-ins

About 40 members of Scandia high school sponsored by the Girl Reserves and Hi Y groups sang Christmas carols for the older people and shut ins around town last Tuesday evening. Lunch was served by Mrs. Alford Johnson and Mrs. George Jeandebeur at their homes.

Painters redecorated several Scandia business places including the Home Oil Station and Johnson Cafe. Will Wilson and a Phillips 66 crew completed the station repainting. the station is operated by Paul Doctor.

County Farm Bureau Holds Inventory Meeting

The A H Larson farm home near Nor way hosted the first Republic County Farm Bureau inventory gathering Friday afternoon. H J Adams county agent reported 38 record report books for the past year. Assistant agent George L McColm led the session to set a standard method for valuing farm property so values compare year to year.

Hit-and-run driver kills 71-year-old on US 36 near Courtland

Anton Erickson, 71, was struck on US 36 just north of Courtland Saturday night by a hit-and-run driver. He died Sunday at Belleville Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2:00 PM Tuesday at the Scandia Methodist Church.

Methodist Church Christmas Services Notes

The church announces a 5 30 A M Christmas morning service and Sunday services the next day. An evening program follows at 7 00. The W F M meets January 2 at the Frasers home and the Ladies Aid gathers January 9. The minister extends holiday greetings to all.

Christmas greetings at local seminary congregation

The congregation invites Mr. R. Seastrand of the Theological Seminary Rock Island Ill to join for a few weeks. An early Christmas matins at 5 30 A M Wednesday and a 7 30 Friday service precede a Sunday school Christmas program with the choir. Children rehearse Thursday at 2 30. Sunday services at 11 follow Sunday school at 10. The annual business meeting is set for Tuesday January 7.

CCC boys harvest cottonwood saplings for shelter belt drive

Northern Kansas and Republic County contribute to reforestation by supplying young cottonwood trees. CCC workers from Nelson Nebraska cut and pull saplings near Hardy at Mrs. Laura Gillilan’s farm, reporting as many as 400000 trees gathered since last June flood.

Drama Players Stage Friday Night Play

Friday evening the Drama Players presented a play titled Should a Woman Tell at the city hall. A fair sized audience saw the story of a small town schoolteacher with an unknown past. Mrs Archie Isaacson was the standout comic as the gossip carrier and Johnny Nystrom's singing between acts drew praise.

Purse Found After Iowa Cattle Robbery Report

Roy Wallen, a Iowa cattle buyer, reported being robbed near Mankato on Sunday night December 15 as $449 vanished from his purse. The purse was found along US 36 west of the Lewis Wallen home by RoHo Thompson last Wednesday. Thompson discarded it after noting only identifications inside. Wallen, who had $480 belonging to a buyer he sold cattle for, was jailed in Hamburg while authorities continued the investigation with Sheriff Moore.
