Compressed Concrete Promises Light Strong Structural Columns
Northwestern Technological Institute tests a new compressed concrete column stronger and cheaper than steel. Proposed by Prof. George A. Maney, the 80 20 model with steel encasing supports higher loads than solid steel. If scalable, it could cut steel use, conserve iron ore, aid postwar reconstruction, and attract interest from France. The method uses minimal water and vibration during compaction.
