Roads Citizens Protest in County Meeting on Road No. 9

A large citizen committee from Kackley and Norway pressed county commissioners to address neglect of county highway No. 9. They argued the southwest was overlooked while eastern roads were favored, urging a surfaced outlet to U S 81 before Cuba to Agenda road completion.

Christmas program at Scandia school auditorium

The Scandia school will present a Christmas program next Tuesday evening December 19 at 7 30 in the city auditorium. The Awakening a musical playlet by Miss LaVerne Johnson features seasonal themes and Christmas meaning with students in roles from mother Matilda McDowell to Santa Claus. Admission is free with a collection taken for expenses. decorations and staging are by a PT A committee led by Mrs Chas Freed.

Jewell County to Benefit from Federal Soil Erosion Plan

Jewell County Kansas will receive a share of a 10 region soil erosion program set by the Federal government. The Kansas State College Extension Service reports about 200 000 acres near Mankato are included, with about 200 tons or more to be covered across ten regions. Arrangements were made with the Secretary of Agriculture for the plan.

Letters to Santa for the Kiddies at The Journal

The Journal will print children’s letters to Santa on page two. Jolly Old St. Nicholas will read them, and he will be in Scandia Saturday afternoon December 23. He plans candy gifts and pennies tossed in the air for children to find.

Community Club backs school addition for Scandia

At a Community Club meeting, members voted unanimously in favor of adding about five rooms and a gymnasium auditorium to the Scandia school. The plan would use a 30 percent federal grant and low interest financing, with local labor. The project aims to ease crowded classes, improve health and ventilation, and boost local employment.

CWA Workers Split Among County Projects

The Scandia CWA workers have been divided into several gangs and sent to approved county projects. Some are at Stony Point, Courtland, and Belleville. Over 300 men are at work and nearly a thousand applications have been received.

Glenn L Morris gave a scientific demonstration of electricity at the city hall Lyceum course. The stage held apparatus as spectators watched devices perform seeming miracles and Morris explained each move and its scientific basis.

Scandia School Vaccinates Children for Diphtheria

Last Monday Dr. C. V. Haggman aided by Miss Blanche Haggman vaccinated the Scandia school children for diphtheria. The serum was supplied by the state. All children except those previously vaccinated or whose parents objected completed the process.

A decorating committee led by Ed Wires was appointed last Monday evening to adorn the city. Plans call for all decorations to be in place before Saturday of this week.

County Committee to Aid in U S Corn Loans

A county committee of three will be named to assist a deputy state sealer in arranging government loans for farmers on their corn. Farmers receive 45 cents per bushel by presenting a receipt at the bank, with repayment or surrender by August 1, 1934. If corn rises in value, the farmer profits. if it falls, the government bears the loss. Farmers must sign the corn hog plan.

Gold Production Surges at Republic County Mines

Gold production in Republic county mines rises with concentrates fetching as high as 516.46 per ton and gold sand at 13.40 per cubic yard. The new highs surpass Joe Malk Jr.’s earlier assays of 392 per ton for concentrates from roughly a month ago.

Wilsons Injured in Car Crash Near Clay Center

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wilson of Clay Center and Marion Knier of Wichita were badly cut and bruised when their car failed to turn ten miles east of Clay Center on the way to the Young Republicans convention in Topeka. Wilson is Fourth district chairman and Knier a Jefferson county delegate. Mrs. Wilson is Agnes Tedrow, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Tedrow. The Wilsons were taken home after receiving treatment, and other relatives visited over the weekend.

The Republic county advisory committee on federal farm loans will hold a meeting in Belleville Friday December 15 at 1 30 p m. Applications for loans go to federal farm loan representatives E H Smies and Court land. The committee does not file the loan but helps creditors and debtors adjust differences when loans do not cover the indebtedness. Farm owners with difficulties should attend for assistance. Highway 81 to Have New Routing in Concordia

Concordia officials announce a new Highway 81 routing with an overpass at Lincoln Street near the fire station and crossing railroad tracks. The bridge will be about half a mile east of the present one, with the route continuing north to intersect the existing road east of Four Corners.
