The school sponsors a miniature Century of Progress carnival Friday December 8 with acts, clowns, animals, exhibitions, and side shows for all ages. Doors open 7 p.m. first performance at 8 p.m. Admittance is a small charge.
Scandia closed an undefeated season with a 46 to 0 Thanksgiving victory over Haddam. Scandia scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter after leading 6 0 at halftime, with Pete Ward and Donald Brand notable on long runs and a key 40 yard dash. Ward led scorers with four TDs. Brand and Larson added one each. Six TDs covered 12 to 40 yard runs. Scandia lettermen retiring include Cleo Ward Ralph Larson Edwin White Kenneth Nylund and Marvin Henry.
The Chick Boyes Players return next Wednesday evening in the comedy One of the Family. Large audiences have greeted their previous productions here. Admission is by merchant's tickets plus ten cents.
Many Scandinavians and neighbors attended Thursday’s Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Doreas Society of the Lutheran Church. Guests enjoyed a communal meal and fellowship at the church hall.
The Community Club will meet Monday evening at 6 30 at the Lodge Hall. They aim to adopt Christmas plans and discuss other important matters. Members are urged to be on time. Solicitors for the meeting are Nathan Isaacson and Melvin Hillery.
The church reports Second Sunday in Advent with gospel Luke 21 25 36 and the note Jesus is coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Sunday school and morning worship occur at usual hours. The United Brethren Presbyterian Sunday School will hold a Christmas program Sunday evening December 17 after the ten o'clock Sunday School and seven o'clock Christian Endeavor service.
Our Saviors Lutheran Church announces Sunday school and Bible class at 10 o clock, morning worship at 11 o clock, and the congregation’s constitution to be read. The Ladies Aid conducts a dinner bazaar and supper featuring old style Little Fisk on Thursday. The monthly aid meets with Mrs. Einar Enstvedt on Thursday, December 14. Pastor Orlin Torgeson extends welcome.
Ada Lutheran Church in Kackley lists Luke 21 25 36 readings with Sunday School and Bible classes at 10 00 morning worship at 10 45 confirmation planned for Thursday December 7 at 7 30 and the class meeting Saturday at 9 00. Choir rehearsal Tuesday at 8 00 and Christmas program rehearsal Sunday at 2 20. Board of administration meets Monday at 7 30. Ladies Aid gathering noted at church parlors.
The postmaster general warns of a 200 percent rise in mail as Christmas nears and urges shoppers to mail early. City and rural patrons should have items to the office by Saturday morning before Christmas Monday, February? wait. Special delivery speeds arrival. Use sturdy packaging, clear addresses, and return info. Do not enclose unrelated messages.
A large number of Scandia men earn CWA checks for road work north of town. First week sixteen workers received 192 dollars. second week eighteen worked three days due to rain and a Saturday night payment of 162 dollars. City officials seek more workers and equitable distribution.
The city submits a project to county CWA authorities for local work. It calls for twelve new laborers to clean and widen the ditches in Scandia.
The state highway department invites bids for paving a section of Highway 386 in Brown County about three miles long. The notice calls for contractors to submit proposals for this road project and outlines bid guidelines.
The Journal asks children to send Christmas letters to St. Nicholas via the paper. Letters will be printed and Santa will read them at the North Pole to determine responses.
The Second Quarterly Meeting of the County Teachers Association will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Belleville school. Miss Amanda Magnuson of Lindsborg will speak. The program includes America, Invocation by Rev. P O. Davis, readings by Miss Jessie Nichol, girls trio Opal Olson Luella Magnuson June Anderson, address by Miss Amanda Magnuson, a quartette from Courtland High School, and a treasurer's report by Miss Evelyn Schaffer. Announcements remain.
The state grain inspector's office would administer sealing and measuring of corn with a deputy sealer in each county and a three member county committee as adviser. Farmers obtain warehouse receipts, then secure loans at 45 cents a bushel from bankers or the commodity corporation. Notes bear 4 percent interest and due Aug 4 1934, with options to pay or deliver corn under contract. Corn must be merchantable No 4 grade or better and crib must pass inspection.
Many local teachers used the Thanksgiving holiday to return to their homes.
Scandia merchants plan two distribution days offering free gifts to the public as part of a holiday promotion. Mrs. M. O Neal of Scandia dies after an operation and pneumonia ends her recovery. funeral held at the Methodist Church.
For months an epidemic of scarlet fever threatens Union Valley. County officials suspect an immune carrier spreads the illness, but the carrier is undetected. Two new cases reported at Emery Johnson and Arthur Coldazier homes. one mild case at Mack Drovetta home isolated and school disinfection completed. Dr. C V Haggiian visits daily. authorities urge cooperation and caution to prevent epidemic. cold and pink eye noted as contagious.
Scandia merchants have begun making their plans for Christmas business. Large orders are going out to wholesale houses. Decorations are coming out of mothballs to complement new fancy attractions. Stores are being attired in green and red trimmings. The holiday season is rapidly approaching and Yuletide spirit is in the air.
The county drive for poor relief was postponed from Friday to Tuesday due to rain. Various teams toured the township reporting fairly good success. Mr. Ellingson will oversee distribution locally.
Objections arise as Scandia considers dropping its football program after a profitless season. Despite a once strong team and a suspenseful finish, low attendance and mounting costs threaten athletic funding. Officials weigh whether community interest justifies continued play amid financial losses.
On Wednesday December 13 Myron McGregor of Norway area will conduct a public sale starting at 10 30 AM. The sale includes nine horses thirty two cattle nineteen hogs and assorted machinery and miscellaneous items.
Last Thursday evening ominous clouds moved over northern Kansas and a light rain began falling during the night. On Friday the precipitation continued providing valuable soaking rain for wheat. About an inch and a half fell locally with Courtland and surrounding areas receiving about twice that amount.
The local Masonic Lodge held its annual meeting and oyster supper on Monday evening. New officers for the ensuing year were elected: Raymond Cooper master, El Reno Sederlin senior warden, Hobart West junior warden, S. Blakeley secretary, E. W. Treaster treasurer, and Ed. Wires trustee.
Prosperity Item reports that The Engwail Motor Co sold a two door Ford sedan on RT 2 to E. HL Mc Nichols of Lovewell last week.
