Belleville Fair Opens With Auto Racing And Rodeo Shows

The Belleville North Central Kansas Free Fair begins Monday August 28 for five days. Events include auto racing on a dust controlled track with $1,000 daily purses, rodeo exhibitions by Circle A, vaudeville acts, Jimmie Lynch Death Dodgers crash demonstrations, Arabian horse acts, and 4-H and educational displays drawing entries from across the nation.

Town to Close Early for North Central Kansas Free Fair

Mayor E C Olson urges Scandia businesses to close at noon on Thursday August 31 to allow residents a day off to attend the North Central Kansas Free Fair in Belleville opening Monday.

WPA Ladies Laid Off at Belleville Depot Sewing Project

The Belleville WPA Sewing project at the old Union Pacific depot reduced from 20 to 32 workers to four starting last week. The cut affects workers with 18 months or more on the payroll. After a month off, those women may re register. Mrs. Of E. Beach visited Fairbury, Nebraska on Tuesday.

Will Rogers' Humorous Story of a Narrow Gate

The tale recounts a man whose wife is believed dead and buried. At the funeral the coffin is jarred at a narrow church gate and a reported groan triggers a dramatic reanimation. The wife recovers briefly, outlives the husband, and is buried again after ten years.

Mrs. Ann Ward Dies at 83 in Norcatur

Mrs. Ann Ward dies at home in Norcatur at 83 years 5 months 20 days. Funeral services were held the following Monday. She is survived by her daughter Mrs. George Jeandebeur of Scandia.

A Hammer Grocery showcase features an 86 plum branch from the Chas Nondorf place in Scandia. Other clusters show 20 fine plums. Sunday guests celebrated Mrs Mamie Freed’s birthday with multiple families and local residents. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Orin Reed, Moe, Grennwood Freed, Freedland Shirley, and others.

Helvey Elected Commander of American Legion Post No 133

Foster Helvey, a longtime Belleville cafe owner, was elected Commander of American Legion Post No 133. He has 21 consecutive years of membership and previously served as adjutant in Fairbury Nebraska. New officers include A C Broyles as Adjutant and A T Huntington as Vice Commander. Delegates to the Wichita state convention were named. All to be inducted on September 24.

Petition to Keep Rock Island Depot Open

Residents circulated a petition this week to oppose the Rock Island Railroad Company’s plan to close its station at this place. A good number of signatures have been gathered. residents who have not signed are urged to sign and attend the hearing in Scandia where the Corporation Commission Board will hear protest against the abandonment.

Duck Season Opens in October as Community Speaks

Union Services at City Hall Park Next Sunday at 8 PM

The closing service at City Hall Park is set for 8 p m next Sunday with a guest speaker and music by the Scandia band. Dr Everett chairs the program committee. The Scandia band collection last night reached 5 dollars. Guest speaker Floyd Robbins of Belleville spoke at the Belleville Union Service last Sunday evening.

Scandia High Opens with New Faculty and Programs

The Scandia Board of Education plans a September 4 opening for Scandia Schools with a complete faculty and building upgrades. High school enrollment is August 28 at 8:00 a.m. Freshmen urged to enroll. upperclassmen may adjust schedules. The program includes Commercial, Vocational Agriculture, Vocational Home Economics, Journalism, and College Preparatory courses. Class A rating allows graduates to enter colleges without exams. New staff include Miss Johnson, Miss Sjogren, Miss Neander, Otis Rogers, and others.
