The 1939 Scandia three day picnic begins today with the Chick Boyes Players presenting a new cast and the Trail of the Lonesome Pine. Central States Shows provide midway thrills and a flying circus offers aerial stunts and first airplane rides. Music by Fizz Powell and his orchestra accompanies the pavement dance each night. Local youths showcase tableau acts and amateur contests offer cash prizes. Baseball fans can see Scandia vs Norway today and Deshler tomorrow.

Remarkable 12 Foot Corn Stalk Grows Near Rock Island Depot
Vernon Erickson farmers on J. J. Smith land south of the Rock Island Depot brought in a 12 foot corn stalk with one perfect ear and another smaller ear. Though not the largest stalk, it was randomly selected and stands as a testament to the dry year's hardiness. The stalk is stored in the Journal office window for inspection.
