One Man's Life Crushed In Rail Wreck Near South Omaha
A Rock Island flyer en route to Omaha from South Omaha at 1 50 pm was wrecked when rails spread in a deep cut. Fireman Vic Erickson was instantly killed and Engineer Charles Porter severely injured. The engine and baggage car were demolished. The wreck occurred three miles out of South Omaha. The tender overturned, gas under the buffet car exploded, and the train burned. Erickson and Porter were Fairbury residents, with families. Henry Fisher and Charles Caldwell escaped from the express car and helped others fight the blaze. Recovery and clearance would take days.
