Lion District Governor Joe Thompson Visits Sandpoint Dinner

Lion District Governor Joe Thompson, a Spokane pharmaceutical executive and longtime Lions member, will speak at a Sept lunch event at the Chateau Restaurant in Sandpoint. The 1942 draftee, Gonzaga and WSU graduate, has two children with wife Marjorie and 19 years of perfect attendance. The meeting is not a ladies night and officers urge wearing official vests.

Strike Ends At GM Plant After 172 Day Walkout

DETROIT UPD reporting that United Auto Workers and General Motors Corp reached a new contract ending GM history’s longest strike. The walkout at Norwood Ohio and other plants began April 8 over assembly line schedules and layoffs. Ratification by UAW Local 674 members pending. Details of the agreement not disclosed.

Ben the Rat Wins Humane Award in Show Business

In Valencia California the American Humane Association awarded Ben the rat the Patsy award for the film Willard. He bested three horses a goose eight dogs an eagle two cats a raccoon four chimps a cougar and a duck and then nibbled the trophy with curiosity.

Highway Week Proclaimed in Idaho and National Proclamations

Gov Cecil D Andrus designated the week of September 24 to 30 as Idaho Highway Week urging residents to recognize highways daily impact. He stressed the need for better highways to meet rising traffic and gain public support. President Nixon also proclaimed National Highway Week.

Drugs Missing After Truck Break-In

Sandpoint police report a Sunday night break-in on a Garret Freight Line truck. An undetermined amount of drugs was stolen from one of four boxes. another box at the scene contained different drugs and medication not touched by the thieves. Break-in reported at 7 15 Monday morning.

Death of Nezperce County political leader Mary Durham

Mary Elizabeth Durham dies at 69 after cancer battle at Lewiston home. A longtime Democratic Party figure in Nezperce County, she served as city councilwoman, state representative, Parks Board member, and county auditor-recorder, and worked on Senator Frank Church's staff. Survived by daughter-in-law and two California grandchildren. funeral arrangements pending at Vasser-Ralis Funeral Home.

Cenarrusa Seeks Changes to Idaho Election Laws

Idaho Secretary of State Pete Cenarrusa said he will propose technical changes to the revised election laws next session. He called the law goofed up, citing ballot design as needing uniformity, clearer party qualifications, and earlier ballot vacancy and registration cutoff dates.
