Chamber Directors to Vote on Tourist Information Center

The Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce faces a Tuesday vote by its Board of Directors to commit to building a tourist information center at the north city limits along U S Highway 95. The project budget runs under 14 000 with about 5 000 already on hand, and Architects West of Sandpoint prepared the plan.

Letter Sparks Fatal Fight and Gunfire in Pine Mountain

Bonner County sheriff says Arlie Lawrence was shot in the ear and scalp while his neighbor Joseph Opferman was treated for a split lip after a confrontation over a Bee Sound Off letter about School Bus Service Extension. Opferman's son joined the fray but was unhurt. Opferman released, Lawrence under observation. No charges yet as investigation continues.

Local youths charged in train derailment and bomb threat

Two 14 year old Sandpoint boys face charges over a September 3 Union Pacific derailment after a switch was left partially open near the north city limits. A 13 year old Kootenai youth will be charged for a September 10 bomb threat at Stidwell Junior High School.

Idaho Faces Rapid Land Shifts From Urban Growth

A federal state report on Idaho land use projects 114000 acres to urbanize in five years, mostly farmland, with 376000 acres more converting to irrigated cropland. Bonner County will see 50000 acres shift to recreation and growth, while rangeland to irrigation dominates statewide changes through 1980. Canyon County remains comparatively stable.
