Rebel convicts killed nine civilian employees at Attica State Prison as over 1,700 state troops National Guardsmen and sheriffs deputies stormed the facility. Twenty eight inmates and several hostages died during a four hour assault amid teargas and gunfire.
Bonner County reports three non injury accidents over the weekend. Bill E. Gilbert, 27, of Libby Montana, failed to negotiate a curve on SH 200 and was cited for failure to give immediate notice. Sunday included a 10 10 a.m. crash involving Gary D Reed, 22, Libby Montana.
Beach Committee vice chairman Wally Staglund calls an emergency session to list improvement priorities for the Sandpoint City Beach. The group seeks state matching funds with a September 17 deadline and plans $50,000 in total costs including restrooms parking waterways lighting and playground equipment.
A tow bar accident two miles north of Selle Road on US 95 left both vehicles in a roadside ditch with no injuries or citations. In Sandpoint three vehicles on US 95 near M-1 Food Market collided in a rear end chain. Lawson cited for following too closely. no injuries. National Forests of the Northern Region sold 113 400 Christmas trees in fiscal 1971 including 10 200 in Northern Idaho.
Former Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery after a nonpolitical farewell. His son gave a simple eulogy, his widow cried and laid a red rose on the casket while a wreath from Communist leadership rested at the graveside. Police and guards blocked access as mourners gathered, and a brass band played the Russian anthem at the burial.
